FINAL:              WPI 3, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Kurt Naugler (Westford, Mass.) netted a goal and an assist to lead WPI to a 3-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Engineers (11-4-1) tallied all three of their goals in an 8:37 span early in the opening half of action, as Naugler converted a feed from fellow sophomore Chris Murray (Canton, Mass.) in the 16th minute for his third marker of the season to stake WPI to an early lead.  Freshman Matt Farrell’s (Groveland, Mass.) unassisted breakaway (his eighth goal of the season) in the 23rd minute extended that margin to 2-0, and Naugler set up junior Tynan MacLeod’s (Groton, Mass.) breakaway just 1:45 later to propel the Engineers to a 3-0 edge at the break.  Senior Asa Mills (Westport, Mass.) collected the lone marker of the match for the host Buccaneers (6-8-2) in the 68th minute, as he converted a feed from junior Rob Robbs (Braintree, Mass.) off an indirect kick for his fourth goal of the campaign to account for the final score.

Junior Michael DeMarco (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up his first win of the season with a pair of first half saves for WPI, which also received two stops from freshman Chris Xavier (Essex, Mass.) in the final 45 minutes of action.  Freshman Thomas Funkhauser (Purcellville, Va.) made six saves in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Buccaneers outshot the Engineers by a 15-13 margin while holding a 6-2 advantage in corners for the evening.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to North Adams, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that begins at 1:00 p.m., while WPI heads to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to square off with MIT in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
