Men’s Lax Defeats URI on Senior Night by the Bay

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – After a last-minute schedule change this week, the undefeated Buccaneer men's lacrosse team hosted a very talented University of Rhode Island club lacrosse team at Clean Harbors Stadium. It was a senior night to remember for nine members of the Buccaneer men's lacrosse program as they and their team defeated the Rams, 17-10.

Inside The Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Sophomore Mitchell Maida (Burlington, Mass) led all scorers in the game with five goals and added three assists, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Senior captain Colby Unterstein (Ellington, Conn) and junior Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass) each scored three times in the win. Jones added an assist and four ground balls.
  • Unterstein added two assists, picked up a game-high 11 ground balls and won 19-of-27 face-offs.
  • Senior captain Alexandre Lucas (Walpole, Mass) and senior Trey Guerrini (Foxborough, Mass) each scored twice. Lucas added two assists, Guerrini assisted on one goal.
  • Senior Braven Bose (Williston, Vt) and Peter Raei (Boston, Mass) each scored once.
  • Freshman Gage Coolahan (Abingdon, Md) assisted on three goals for the Bucs.
  • Sophomore Leo Allgaier (Duxbury, Mass) caused a game-high four turnovers in the win.
  • Between the pipes, Viktor Wright (Plymouth, Mass) made five saves in his third win of the season.

 

For The Rams

  • Ty Kaplow scored three times for URI and recorded an assist.
  • Keegan Reilly and Hunter LaFrance each scored twice in the loss.
  • Three other players netted a goal apiece.
  • Jack Duffy, who scored a goal, also recorded a team-high two assists. Three other players also assisted on goals for the Rams.
  • In goa, Hunter Billings made 17 saves, some very impressive, and allowed 17 goals in the loss.

 

How It Happened

  • URI jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
  • Once the Buccaneer got their bearings straight, they rattled off three goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter, including a rocket of a goal from Unterstein with two second left on the clock.
  • With a 3-2 lead to begin the second, the Bucs allowed two Ram goals, giving up a 4-3 lead to their guests.
  • Maritime proceeded to go on a five goals run, taking an 8-4 lead, a lead they would never look back from.
  • In the final three and a half minutes of the first half, the Rams scored twice, the Buccaneers answered one of those goals. At the half, Maritime held a 9-6 lead.
  • To begin the second half, the Bucs scored twice in the first three minutes to extend their lead to five, their biggest so far in the game.
  • URI followed with three of their own to bring the deficit back to two goals.
  • Up 11-9, the Buccaneers scored thrice to close out the third period of play, holding a 14-9 advantage.
  • The fourth quarter had the least amount of goals scored in the game for any single period of play.
  • The Rams threatened often, though a strong Maritime defense did not let the Rams gain any momentum.
  • The Bucs scored three times in the quarter which was met by only one more URI goal.
  • One the clock struck triple zeros, the Buccaneers had secured a 17-10 victory and improved to 3-0 on the year.

What's Next?

The Buccaneers will travel to Boston on Saturday, April 24th to take on UMass-Boston in their final game of the 2020 season. The game will begin at 7pm. No spectators are allowed at this time. The game can be watched and followed at mmabucs.com.
