BucBall Sweep the Lancers in Season Finale

WORCESTER, Mass – The Buccaneers traveled to Worcester on Saturday afternoon to take on Worcester State in double header at Lyon Diamond to finish off their 2021 slate of games. In a back and forth game one, the Bucs took the nine-inning affair 7-6. In game two, the Bucs jumped out to an early lead and held on the rest of the way winning game two, 7-6, for a sweep of the Lancers.

Maritime

  • Seven Buccaneers had hits in a 13-hit game. Alex Schlapak (Dover, N.H.) led the way with three hits, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Ben Paine (Dartmouth, Mass), Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass), Frank Aten (Brockton, Mass), and Zach Sylvia (Brockton, Mass) all had multi-hit games.
  • Freshman Brett Velzis (Cypress, Tx) recorded one hit in the game, a homerun, his second in as many games, drove in three runs and scored twice. He also walked.
  • Junior Aidan Henderson (Hanover, Mass) also recorded a hit in the game.
  • Along with Velzis's home run, Sylvia added an extra base hit with a double.
  • Sylvia drove in two runs in the game, Sullo and Schlapak each plated a run.
  • Paine stole a base in the win.

 

Worcester

  • Worcester strung together 18 hits in the loss. Eight different players had hits including six multi-hit games.
  • Thomas DiBattista put together a four-hit game with two RBI to lead the Lancers.
  • Chris Ausiello and Pat Galvin both had three hits in the game.
  • Galvin and DiBattista each drove in two runs with Chris Wright driving in one as well.
  • Sean Devin, Ausiello, DiBattista and Galvin all had extra base hits. Galvin ad home run, DiBattista a triple, Devin and Ausiello each doubled.
  • Three played stole bases in the loss for the Lancers, Zack Roberts, Zach Landry and DiBattista

 

How It Happened

  • A wild game one saw the Lancers score first in the bottom of the second on a DiBattista single that put the hosts up 1-0.
  • Maritime answered quickly in the top of the third getting a sacrifice fly from Sylvia that scored Paine to make it 1-1. Later in the inning, with two runner on, Velzis hit his second Buccaneer home run over the right field fence to make it a 4-1 game in favor of the Bucs.
  • With the lancers being held at bay in the third, the Bucs struck again in the fourth with two more runs. One on another sacrifice fly by the Bucs, this one from Schlapak, followed by an RBI since from Sullo that scored Paine.
  • With the score 6-1 Buccaneers, the teams went dormant until the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Lancers scored a run to cut the deficit to four runs.
  • Down 6-2 in the seventh, Galvin hit a two-run dinger to cut the Buccaneer lead to two runs, 6-4.
  • Later in the same inning, the Lancers scored two more times to tie the game at 6-6 after seven innings.
  • In the eighth inning, Sylvia drove home the go-ahead run on a single, scoring John Tropea (East Sandwich, Mass) to take a 7-6 lead.
  • The Lancers were unable to score in either of their final two at-bats and the Bucs took game one, 7-6.

Maritime

  • Dylan Sullo, Michael Doyle (Boston, Mass), and Zach Sylvia each had multi-hit games for the Bucs in game two. Sylvia recorded one of two extra base hits in the win with a double.
  • Braden Killens (Marshfield, Mass) hit his first career home run in the top of the third inning. He went 1-for-4 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Ben Paine, Alex Schlapak, Brett Velzis, John Tropea, and Frank Aten all tallied one hit in the 12 hit game for Maritime.
  • Sullo, Velzis and Doyle each drove in a run with six different Bucs scoring in the win.

 

For The Lancers

  • Worcester put together eight hits in the game two loss. Ausiello and Tom Halliwell each had two-hit games for the hosts. Ausiello had the lone extra base hit, a double.
  • Zack Roberts, Jake Breton, Pat Galvin and Thomas DiBattista all had one hit.
  • Halliwell, Ausiello and Roberts all drove in runs; Halliwell led the way with two RBI.
  • Galvin and Ausiello each scored two runs in the loss. Joe Rogato and DiBattista scored the others to round out the Lancer scoring.
  • Ausiello and DiBattista both stole a base for Worcester.

 

How It Happened

  • Maritime wasted no time jumping out to a big lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Sullo, Velzis, Killens, and Doyle were responsible for bringing in runs in the inning.
  • Up 5-0, Teehan worked through the Lancer order quickly in the first two innings to hold the lead.
  • In the top of the third, the Bucs added two more runs on the Killens long ball.
  • The Lancer pitching staff held the Buccaneers at bay after the third, ultimately not allowing them to score another run in the game.
  • The Bucs were able to hold off the Lancers and preserve their five-run lead until the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth frame Worcester manufactured two runs on a Roberts single and a Buccaneer error on a steal attempt.
  • After five innings of play, the Bucs still had a commanding 7-2 advantage over their hosts. Though both teams threatened over the next two and a half innings, which were pretty routine for each pitching staff, the Lancers would make a big splash in the bottom of the eighth.
  • In that inning, Worcester cut the lead to two runs for the Bucs. The scored their three runs on Ausiello and Halliwell singles. Halliwell's single plated two.
  • After eight innings the Bucs lead was down to 7-5.
  • After making a pitching change in the eighth, the Buccaneers and reliever Brady Parks went in to the ninth looking for the sweep of the Lancers. Though the team from Worcester scored a run in the ninth on an error, Parks was able to hold them off picking up the save and preserving the win, 7-6, for Teehan and the Bucs.

 

The Buccaneers finish the 2021 season 3-5, winning their final three games of the year.
