Baseball Splits with Fitchburg on Senior Day

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Buccaneer baseball team welcomed the Fitchburg State Falcons in to Hendy Field on Sunday afternoon looking for their first win of the season against a 1-6 Falcons team. Though the Buccaneers lost game one by a score of 8-1, they won game two impressively, 6-1.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Senior Ben Paine (Dartmouth, Mass) went 2-for-3 in game one with an RBI.
  • Senior Chris McHugh (Rockland, Mass) recorded the only other Maritime hit in the game.
  • Freshman AJ Pietrafesa (Harwinton, Conn) scored the lone run in the loss.
  • Senior Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass) and Pietrafesa each recorded a walk.
  • Paine and Sullo both stole a base for the Bucs.

 

Fitchburg

  • Cameron Donahue and Johan Asencio had multi-hit games for the guests. Both of Donahue's hits were of the extra base variety, a double and a triple.
  • Zachary May recorded a double in his only hit
  • Nick Cordeau hit a home run to centerfield for the Falcons.
  • Four other Falcons added singles to the box score.
  • Six players drove in runs in the win, two from Donahue.

 

How It Happened

  • Fitchburg jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first before the Buccaneers had a chance to swing the bats.
  • Up 3-0, Fitchburg scored a fourth run in the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0.
  • The Buccaneers got on the board in the bottom of the third on an infield single by Pain, scoring Pietrafesa.
  • Now up 4-1, Falcon's centerfielder Cordeau hit a towering home run over the fun in dead center field.
  • The Falcons went on to score four more runs in the fourth bringing the score to 8-1.
  • The Buccaneers could not answer in any of their final four at-bats dropping game one, 8-1.

Maritime: John Teehan (Boston, Mass) (W, 1-2): 7 IP | 3 H | 1 R | 0 ER | 1 BB | 9 K

Fitchburg: Austin Alzate (L, 0-1): 3 IP | 3 H | 3 R | 3 ER | 2 BB | 2 K

 

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Paine had another multi-hit game in game two, with a single and a double. He also scored twice in the win.
  • Freshman Brett Velzis (Cypress, Tx) continued his impressive rookie campaign with the Bucs with a double and a home run with three RBI and a run scored.
  • Alex Schlapak (Dover, N.H.), and Braden Killens (Marshfield, Mass) had the other two hits for the Bucs. Killens drove in two runs in the game, Schlapak drove in one.
  • Sullo and John Tropea (East Sandwich, Mass) both walked twice in the game and each scored once.

 

Fitchburg

  • Nick Cordeau strung together all three hits in the game for the Falcons, two singles and a double.
  • Vincent Eramo drove in the only Falcon run of the day, scored by Cordeau.
  • Cordeau also stole a base in the loss.
  • Zach May worked the only walk given up by Teehan

 

How It Happened

  • John Teehan pitched his best game of 2021 and it was classic #38 as he mowed down nine Fitchburg hitters en route to a complete game victory on senior day. He threw 88 pitched in the game, 62 for strikes.
  • Fitchburg scored their only run of the game on an RBI ground out by Eramo in the top of the first inning.
  • From there, the Buccaneers followed Teehan's lead at the plate and scored one run in each of the first three innings, including the solo home run from Velzis in the second.
  • Up 3-1 after four and a half innings, the Bucs tacked on two more runs in the fifth on the Velzis double, scoring Sullo and Killens.
  • Maritime added the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Schlapak single, scoring Tropea.
  • Teehan went on to strike out the side in order in the top of the seventh to secure the 6-1 victory, the first of 2021 for the Bucs.

 

What's Next?

The Buccaneers will travel to Worcester State on Saturday, April 24th, for their final doubleheader of the 2021 season against the Lancers. Game one is scheduled to start at 12pm.
