Bucs Sail to Victory over Bears
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Friday evening, the 1-0 Buccaneer men's lacrosse team played host to the Bridgewater State Bears men's club lacrosse team in the team's 2021 home opener. After a convincing start and a solid finish, the Bucs took down the Bears 18-5 to improve to 2-0 on the year.

For The Bucs
- Senior midfielder Trey Guerrini (Foxborough, Mass) led all scorers in the game with five goals. Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass) scored four goals and added an assist.
- Mitchell Maida (Burlington, Mass) scored three of his own while adding three assists.
- Freshman Gage Collahan (Abingdon, Md) scored twice in the game while leading all players with five assists in the win.
- Braven Bose (Williston, Vt), Dale Donovan (Norwalk, Conn), Patrick Lawson (East Sandwich, Mass), and Peter Raei (Boston, Mass) each scored once in the game. For Donovan and Lawson, it was their first career goals in a Buccaneer uniform. Donovan also added an assist.
- Senior Captain Alexandre Lucas (Walpole, Mass) assisted on two goals. Nick Lamattini (Groveland, Mass), and Colby Unterstein (Ellington, Conn) each tallied an assist as well.
- Defensively, Lawson and Bose each cause two turnovers. Seven other players recorded one cause turnover.
- Unterstein was a force in the faceoff circle winning 17 of 18 face-offs for the second consecutive game. He picked up all 17 of the ground balls off the face-offs.
- Freshmen Tyler Smith (Hampstead, N.C.) and Stephen McBrine (Weymouth, Mass) went a combined 3-for-8 on face-offs, Smith winning his only and McBrine winning two.
- Between the pipes, junior goalkeeper Viktor Wright (Plymouth, Mass) made 11 saves for the second consecutive game, stopping 11 of 11 shots, good for a 73.3 save percentage.
For The Bears
- Hayden Giampietro scored twice for the Bears. Nich Mathieu, Cullen Murphy and Patrick Spitzner score the other three Bridgewater goals.
- Jon Coates recorded the only two assists in the game for the guests.
- Defensively, Alex Bruhm caused a game-high four turnovers and picked up a team-high 5 ground balls.
- In goal, Jordan Methia made 20 saves on 38 shots and allowed the 18 Maritime goals.
How It Happened
Maritime got on the board in under two minutes by way of a Maida goa from Coolahan. Under a minute later, Maida returned the favor, assisting on a Coolahan goal in a man-up opportunity. The Bucs went on to score five more goals in an impressive 7-0 run. Additional goals in the first came from Jones, Maida again, two from Guerrini, and another from Jones. With under a minute left in the period, Bridgewater ended the run on a Murphy goal in a man-up situation. At the end of quarter number one, the Bucs led the Bears, 7-1.
The second quarter was tied for the lowest scoring quarter in the game with the fourth quarter as there were only four goals netted, all by the Bucs. Jones scored his third with just under 13 minutes left in the period. That goal was followed by Maida and Guerrini goals in the middle of the quarter. With just over two minutes left before the half, Guerrini added another on an assist from Coolahan. At the half, Maritime led 11-1.
Period three stated as the other periods in the first half did, with a Maritime goal. Guerrini scored his fourth three minutes in. Bridgewater answered with a Giampietro goal two minute later. The Bucs went on to score two, from Bose and Raei, to extend their lead to 14-2 with just over 20 minutes left in the game. Bridgewater then went on to score their only back-to-back goals of the contest. Giampietro scored with four and a half minutes left in the period, followed by Mathieu scoring with 3:11 left in the third. Coolahan wrapped up the scoring in the third, assisted by Jones, to run the score to 15-4 at the end of three.
The fourth quarter didn't provide as many fireworks as the first and third quarters but it did provide three more Buccaneer goals. Lawson scored with 9:40 left in regulation. Spitzner netted the last goal of the game for Bridgewater with 9:02 remaining. With just under five minutes to play, Jones found the back of the net one last time. Then, with a minute left in the game, Lamattina found Donovan for the final goal of the game. On what ended up being a foggy, cool night in Buzzards Bay, the Buccaneer sailed away with the victory, 18-5, over Bridgewater State.
What's Next?
The Buccaneers will play host to Salem State on Saturday, April 17th in the team's final home game of the 2021 season. The Bucs are 1-0 against Salem after a 23-9 victory over the Vikings on April 10th. It will also be senior night for Maritime.
