Buccaneers Shutout at Maritime Classic

KINGS POINTS, N.Y. – The Buccaneers traveled to The US Merchant Marine Academy this weekend for the 10th Annual Volleyball Maritime Classic this weekend. The team played matches against Merchant Marine, Maine Maritime and SUNY Maritime, losing all three in straight sets.

Match One – Merchant Marine

The Basics

Final: Mariners 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-6)

Records: Mass Maritime 1-4

               Merchant Mariner 3-5

For The Bucs

  • Senior Captain Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass) led the Bucs with two kills in the game including a service ace.
  • Senior Captain Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass) led the Bucs and tied a match-high with seven digs.

For The Mariners

  • Paige Smith racked up 15 kills in the match and tied for the Mariner and match lead with seven digs.
  • Kayleigh Kappas led the match with 30 assists.
  • Claire Hyun also tied a match-high with seven digs.

How It Happened

Merchant Marine controlled each of the three sets in the match against the Buccaneers. They won each set by 13 or more points. Maritime had five kills total in the match, two in the first set, one in the second and two in the third. Merchant Marine went 13, 14,10 in terms of kills in each set. The Buccaneers fell in the opener to the Maritime Classic, 3-0.

 

Match Two – Maine Maritime

The Basics

Final: Mariners 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-12)

Records: Mass Maritime 1-5

               Maine Maritime 7-1

For The Bucs

  • Sophomore Madison Morrill (Westborough, Mass) led the Bucs with five kills.
  • Junior Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn) had three kills in the game with four digs.
  • Senior Captain Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass) led the Bucs with nine assists.
  • Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass) and freshman Rebecca Cargile (Henderson, Nevada) each had two service aces.
  • Sophomore Bianca Andronic (Somerset, Mass) led the Buccaneers with six digs in the match.
  • Harrison and Morrill combined for the Bucs lone block.

For The Mariners

  • Rachel Melampy led all players with 12 kills. She also had two assists, three service aces and three digs.
  • Avery O'Neal had four kills, and a match-high 31 assists. She added four digs.
  • Maria Perez led all players with five service aces and seven kills.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers were considerably better against Maine as they had 11 kills in the match. Five came in the second set, four in the third. Maine had 16 kills in the first set, 11 in the second and 13 in the third. Mass Maritime posted a .000 hitting percentage in the third set. Though the Bucs kept the second set close, they were unable to take any game, falling 3-0 to the Mariners in their second game of the Classic.

 

Match Three – SUNY Maritime

The Basics

Final: Privateers 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-11)

Records: Mass Maritime 1-6

               SUNY Maritime 2-6

For The Bucs

  • Freshman Hannah Tarbox (Attleboro, Mass) led the Bucs and posted a weekend high six kills in the match against SUNY.
  • Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass), Madison Morrill (Westborough, Mass) and freshman Alexa Smith (Shippensburg, Penn) each had two kills in the match.

For The Privateers

  • Celyna Custodio led all players with nine kills in the match.
  • Abby Steele tallied eight kills and 10 digs.
  • Rylee Malone had a match-high 13 digs in the game as well as a match-high four service aces.
  • Erika Kirchner racked up a match-high 26 assists to go along with two kills, three services aces and four digs.

How It Happened

Both teams came in to the Sunday afternoon match with one win on the season. SUNY took the first and third sets by identical 25-11 scores but the Bucs pushed the second set past the 25-point win mark as the winning team must win by two, and pushed it to 26-24 but were unable to take any of the first three sets falling, 3-0, to the Privateers.
