Poh Takes Top Honors In Discus As Outdoor Track & Field Records 18 Top Eight Finishes At Connecticut College Silfen Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track and field team posted 18 top eight individual performances in a solid day of competition on Saturday afternoon at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational, as the Buccaneer men finished fifth in the team scoring and the women placed seventh in the final team standings.

 

Junior Zachary Poh (Bridgewater, Mass.) won the discus for a second straight week in competition in the Nutmeg State, as he posted a mark of 42.18 meters while adding a seventh place finish in the hammer throw (34.60 meters on the day).  Freshman Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) posted a second place performance in the javelin (34.63 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime, while junior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) finished second in the 110 meter high hurdles (16.99) and third in the 400 meter high hurdles (59.63).

 

Junior Anthony Downs (West Roxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, R.I.) posted respective fourth place performances in the 5,000 meters (20:16.41) and hammer throw (39.60 meters), while junior Danielle Soar (Templeton, Mass.) collected a pair of fifth place finishes in the hammer throw (35.25 meters) and javelin (30.82 meters).  Junior Cody Carneiro (Wrentham, Mass.) was fifth in the discus (31.92 meters) and was part of a trio of Buccaneers that placed 5-6-7 in the javelin, as he was behind senior Steven Ellershaw (Chester, Mass.) and freshman Peter Hamill (Norton, Mass.) in the event that saw them post respective marks of 43.18, 42.96 and 41.22 meters.

 

Senior Ted Mello (Acushnet, Mass.) placed sixth in the triple jump (11.49 meters) and eighth in the long jump (5.92 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime, while fellow senior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) posted a seventh place performance in the 5,000 meters (22:56.02).  Junior Mark Baker (Charlestown, R.I.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with a pair of eighth place finishes in the 400 meter high hurdles (1:08.19) and triple jump (10.40 meters), respectively.  Trinity took top team honors on the men’s side, while host Connecticut College copped the top team score in the women’s competition.

 

Massachusetts Maritime travels to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships as part of the New England Alliance that will be hosted by UMass Dartmouth beginning at 11:00 a.m.
