FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 3, JOHNSON & WALES 0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Brian Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.) scattered seven hits and struck out three over six innings of work to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-0 non-league college baseball victory over Johnson & Wales Monday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The host Buccaneers (3-2) plated the only run they would need in the bottom of the fourth, as junior Logan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass.) reached out a bunt single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and to third on a groundout before scoring on a two-out error.  That score held up until the bottom of the eighth when freshman Jackson Simone (Seattle, Wash.) delivered a two-out, two-run single that scored Sullo and junior Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) with a pair of insurance tallies that accounted for the final margin.

Kennedy collected two of Massachusetts Maritime’s six hits (including a double) on the day, as the hosts also received singles from senior Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass.) and junior Billy Keane (Braintree, Mass.).  Kwedor threw 72 strikes over the first six frames to improve to 2-0 on the season for the Buccaneers, as senior Daniel Avery (Milford, Mass.) tossed a perfect seventh frame and freshman Matt Smith (Lowell, Mass.) worked around a hit and pair of walks while fanning four over the final two innings to earn his first collegiate save.

Seniors Ryan Cabral (Scituate, R.I.) and Ivan Reyes (Cranston, R.I.) each had two of the visiting Wildcats’ (4-2) eight hits on the afternoon, as junior Keith Grant (East Providence, R.I.) allowed an unearned run and struck out four over seven innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the season with the setback.  Senior Chris Baldwin (Pawtucket, R.I.) added a double on the day for Johnson & Wales, which also received singles from senior Greg Joubert (Cumberland, R.I.) and juniors Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, R.I.) and Edison Mercado (Providence, R.I.).

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Dean in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Johnson & Wales heads to Milton, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon for a non-league contest with Curry that also begins at 3:30 p.m.
