How It Happened

From kickoff the Bucs and Owls played much of the first few minutes in the middle third of the field until the Buccaneers took the ball in to the offensive third four minutes in. After being awarded a free kick, the Bucs kept the ball deep in the offensive area which provided Quindley with an opportunity on goal. On a pass from Podchaiski, she took her chance and a shot the started across the face of the goal took e bounce off of the diving keeper's hands and found the back of the net to put Maritime up 1-0 in the fifth minute. Much of the rest of the first half was each team trading offensive opportunities, many coming from Presque Isle as the hosts sat back in a defensive formation protecting their slim advantage. With the Bucs defense holding strong the first half ended with the score 1-0.

In the second half, both teams took their chances in their respective offensive ends. The Owls took eight shots in the second half with the Bucs trailing right behind them with seven. Though the Owls got three shots on target in the second half, Durgin was able to handle each of them keeping UMPI off the board. Maritime was able to put two shots on goal in the second forty-five to no avail. The Buccaneer defense held strong and protected the 1-0 lead for the final minutes of the game giving the hosts a season opening win, 1-0, on Labor Day.
