Softball: Bucs Walk off with a Sweep of Wildcats

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- The Buccaneers played host to Bay Path on Wednesday in a non-conference double header. In comeback fashion they swept the doubleheader winning game on 5-3 and game two 9-8 in 10 innings on a Maia Ostromecki walk off double.

 

Game One

  • Daisy Guzman led all players with three hits and two RBI in the loss.
  • Emma Scheeren and Alexandra Henderson each had a hit.
  • Scheeren and Madisyn Vera scored the runs.
  • Scheeren was credited with a stolen base.

How It Happened

Bay path scored first in the top of the first on an error. A second error on the same play allowed Vera to come around and score.

The Wildcats held off the Bucs and added a second run in the top of the third on a Guzman single to score Scheeren. In the bottom of the third, Maritime tied the game at 2-2. The first run scored on a Wildcat miscue with Harring coming across the plate. Camelo then drove in Butler on an infield single.

The Bucs took their first and last lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Deasy drove in Wright on a ground out to third. The Bucs led 3-2 after four.

In the fifth, the Buccaneers scored two runs. Camelo scored on a wild pitch followed by Roberts-Capak scoring on a Wright ground out to short.

In the seventh, down by three, Bay Path threatened getting two runners on with one out. After a Vera line out to third, Guzman singled to score Scheeren. DiDomenico got Henderson to ground out to Camelo to seal the game one win, 5-3.

  • Cam Roberts-CapakMalarie PittsleyKylie DeasyMaia OstromeckiRubi Butler, and Olivia Camelo all had multi-hit games with two hits each.
  • Abby Pope and Kayley Wright each had a hit as well.
  • Roberts-Capak was credited with two RBIs. Pope, Pittsley, Ostromecki, and Wright all drove in one run.
  • Pittsley, Butler, and Camelo all scored twice. Mikayla Hunter, Deasy, and Ostromecki all scored once.
  • Pittsley drew the only walk of the game.
  • Ostromecki and Butler each hit doubles. Camelo recorded her team leading third triple of the season. Pittsley hit the teams first home run of the season which was an inside the park home run, the second insider of the senior's career.
  • Roberts-Capak and Pittsley each stole two bases. Roberts-Capak's two stolen bases ties her with Pope for the all-time single season stolen base record with 14.

  • Alexandra Henderson led all players with five hits in the game. 
  • Ansley Morrison had three hits to her credit.
  • Taylor Suffoletto and Madisyn Vera each had two hits.
  • Henderson drove in a game-high three runs. Morrison drove in two. 
  • Daisy Guzman scored twice.
  • Vera and Morrison each had doubles.
  • Brooke Evanchak and Morrison each stole a bag.

How It Happened

The teams were quiet in the first three innings of the game playing to a 0-0 score through those three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Bay Path took a 1-0 lead on a Morrison ground out that scored Guzman. In the bottom of the fourth, Pittsley hit her inside the park home run to left center to tie the game at 1-1.

After some oxygen in the dugout after running around the bases, Pittsley set down the Wildcats in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Roberts-Capak brought home Butler on an infield single to take the lead, 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, Henderson and Morrison drove in runs to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. 

The Bucs had their backs against the wall, for the first time, in the bottom of the seventh. Down 3-2, with two outs, Camelo tripled to left center. Pope followed that with a hard single up the middle to bring Camelo in and tie the game. Scheeren got Roberts-Capak to ground out and the teams went to extra innings.

In extras, teams begin with a runner at second base in each half inning. In the top of the eighth, Bay Path retook the lead, 4-3, on a Henderson single that scored Guzman. Again with the game on the line, the Bucs scored the tying run when DEasy grounded into a fielder's choice. Roberts-Capak was put out at home and Deasy with the heads up, headed for second, drawing a throw allowing Pittsley to score to tie the game once again. The teams went to the ninth tied at 4-4.

In the ninth, Bay Path scored three runs to take a 7-4 lead. Suffoletto singled in a run, Vera hit a sacrifice fly to center, Henderson singled to score Suffoletto. The Bucs trailed by three in the bottom of the inning. Wright singled to bring Ostromecki around from third to make it 7-5. Then, with two outs, Roberts-Capak singled to left, the ball rolled past the glove of the left fielder allowing Butler and Camelo to score and tie the game, again, at 7-7.

In the top of the 10th inning, Bay Path took the lead once again, 8-7 on a wild pitch that scored Evanchak. Down 8-7, the Bucs got a single from Deasy on the infield. Hunter came around to score on a throwing error by the second baseman to tie the game again. Deasy ended up at second after the error. With no outs in the inning, Ostromecki delivered the hit that would walk the Bucs off. She hit an opposite field double down the right field line that scored deasy from second securing the 9-8 game two win and sweep of the doubleheader for the Bucs.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers travel to Fitchburg State Thursday afternoon for a conference doubleheader with the Falcons beginning at 3pm.
