Softball: Pope set Single-Season Record in Losses to Owls

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Maritime hosted Westfield State at Rollins field on Saturday in their second conference doubleheader of the season. Though the Bucs were swept by the Owls the bright spot of the day was junior captain Abby Pope setting the new program record for steals in a season with 14. The Bucs fell 13-0 and 17-6.

 

Game One

The Basics

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Senior captain Cam Roberts-Capak recorded both Buccaneer hits in the game, one of which was a double.
  • Mikayla Hunter drew the only walk of the game. 

Westfield

  • Meghan Doyle went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.
  • Four other players recorded two-hit games for the Owls. 
  • Alyssa Clark had two hits, five RBI and two runs scored.
  • Doyle had two doubles in the games. Colleen Hughes tallied one two bagger.
  • Clark hit two home runs in the win. Christina Ciampa also went yard.
  • Leadoff hitter Lindsay Cordopatri had two stolen bases to her credit. Megan Metzger added one.

How It Happened

Westfield scored in the top of the first on a Hughes sacrifice fly, scoring Cordopatri. They took and held on to that 1-0 lead into the third.

In the third, the Owls added four more runs, one on a Hughes double, two on Clark's first home run and one on a Doyle single.

In the sixth, Westfield put the game away, scoring seven runs, two on Ciampa's homerun and three on Clark's second homer of the day. The Owls took game one 13-0 in six innings.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Abby Pope and Olivia Camelo each had two hits in game two.
  • Cam Roberts-Capak, Pittsley, Kylie Deasy, and Carleen Harring each had one hit.
  • Pope drove in two runs, Deasy plated one.
  • Pope scored three of the team's runs with Camelo scoring two and Harring coming across the plate once. 
  • Pope drew the only walk of the game for the Bucs
  • Both of Camelo's hits were doubles.
  • Pope, Roberts-Capak and Pittsley all had stolen bases in the loss. Pope's stolen base was the 14th of the season for the junior Captain, setting a new program record for most steals in a season.

Westfield

  • Lindsay Cordopatri, Skylar Dutra, Colleen Hughes, and Victoria Quill all had three-hit games.
  • Michaela Bruno and Lexus Mastromatteo had two-hit games.
  • Hughes drove in three runs, Cordopatri plated three.
  • Cordopatri, Dutra and Alexandra Czarkosky all scored three times. 
  • Mastromatteo drew two of four Owls walks.
  • Gianna Conte and Annelyse Rivera had doubles in the win.
  • Two of Bruno's hits were triples. Dutra added a triple as well.
  • Cordopatri stole two bags. Dutra took one base.

How It Happened

The Owls scored first once again in the top of the first getting two runs on a Dutra triple and a Hughes ground out to score Dutra. Maritime cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame on a Deasy single to score Pope

In the second, Westfield scored two more runs on Czarkosky and Quill singles to make it 4-1. In the bottom of the second, the Bucs tied the game, 4-4, on back-to-back infield singles from Pope and Roberts-Capak.

Westfield scored one in the third to take a 5-4 lead. They extended that lead to two in the fourth with a run scoring on a Buccaneer miscue to make it 6-4. In the fifth, the Owls opened their lead to five runs, scoring three and adding one more in the sixth to make it 10-6. 

Then, in the seventh inning, Westfield scored seven more runs, three on doubles, four on singles, to take a commanding 17-4 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, the Buccaneers didn't go down without a fight, scoring two runs. One off a Pope infield single to score Camelo, the other on a Roberts-Capak grounder that brought Pope home on a throwing error. It wouldn't be enough as the Owls took game two, 17-6, and swept the doubleheader.

The Buccaneers will take on Bay Path at home on Wednesday, April 13th beginning at 4pm.
