Softball: Bucs Stung by Hornets

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. -- The Buccaneers took on NVU-Lyndon for the second time in South Carolina on Sunday afternoon in the final day of games for the team before heading north. Though the Bucs started off strong, holding a 3-2 lead after two innings, the Hornets got the best of the Bucs winning the game 17-3 in five innings.

  • Seven players had two or more hits for the Hornets in the game, including Blake Southworth with four and Amber Everett with three. In total, the Hornets had 19 hits in the game.
  • Lauren Siciliano drove in a game-high four runs in the win while the pitcher, Victoria Valentine, drove in three. Five other Hornets recorded RBI.
  • Eight different Lyndon players scored with Everett and Southworth scoring thrice. 
  • Claudia Knapp, who had two, and Emily Anderson each had doubles in the game.
  • Nyah Garner and Siciliano both stole bases in the game.

How It Happened

The teams traded runs each of the first three innings. Maritime opened the scoring in the first on a Harring infield single that score Abby pope on an error. In the bottom of the first, the Hornets tied the game at ones on a Siciliano sacrifice fly to right.

In the second, the teams each scored one run once again. The Bucs on a DiDomenico single through the left side which scored Ruginski and then the Hornets on a wild pitch.

With the score 2-2 after two, the Bucs struck again in the third. Ruginski single through the middle of the infield and Pittsley came around to score from second. In the bottom of the inning the Hornets got their run as well and then some. Lyndon ended up putting up eight in the inning to go out to a 10-3 lead over the Bucs. 

Maritime was unable to answer in the top of the fourth and the Hornets added in the bottom of the inning with seven more runs to take a 17-3 lead which would end up being the final after the run rule was in effect after 4.5 innings as Lyndon was the home team.

What's Next

The Buccaneers travel home on Monday to begin classes this week. The team's next game will not be until Saturday, MArch 12th when they host New England College in their home opener at 4pm.
