Softball: Spartans Sweep Bucs in Doubleheader

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. -- The Buccaneers took on the Little East's Castleton Spartans on Saturday afternoon in a double header. Coming in to the game the Bucs were 1-2 while Castleton came in with a 4-0 record. In game one, the Bucs held their own falling 6-1. In game two, the Castleton bats came alive as they took down the Bucs 21-1 in five innings.

  • The Spartans had 13 hits total in the game with Kate Lapan and Jamie Boyle each recording three. Hannah Mosher had two hits from the two hole in the lineup.

  • Mosher and Boyle each recorded a double while Makenna Thorne hit a triple.

How It Happened

Castleton controled the game through the first five innings, keeping the Bucs off of the board until late in the game.

In each of the first two innings the Spartans scored a run to take a 2-0 lead after two innings. After being blanked in the third inning, the team from Central Vermont scored two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 advantage.

In the fifth, Castleton scored twice more on the Thorne triple and a sacrifice fly to left. 

Down 6-0, the Bucs got their first and only run of the game in the top of the sixth on a Roberts-Capak double that scored Pope. 

Neither team could find a way to bring any more runs in in the game and Castleton took game one, 6-1.

At The Plate

  • Maritime recorded two hits in the game, coming off the bats of Olivia Camelo and Maia Ostromecki.
  • Camelo had the only extra base hit, a double, and had an RBI.
  • Ostromecki scored the team's run in the loss.

Castleton

  • Nine Castleton hitters had multi-hit games, including three-hit games from Kylie Wright and Blake Rich.
  • The Spartans had 23 total hits in the win.
  • Riche drove in five runs while Makenna thorne and Jamie Boyle each drove in three. Three other players drove in two runs apiece. 
  • Four players on the team scored three times with two others scoring twice.
  • Castleton tallied eight extra-base hits with five doubles, a triple and two home runs from Wright and Machaila Arjavich

How It Happened

The Castleton bats came out hot in the first innings as they plated 12 runs in the top half of the frame. They went on to add four more in the top of the second and one in the top of the third. Down 17 in the bottom of the third, Camelo hit a double with Ostromecki on base to bring her around to score. 

In the top of the fourth inning, the Spartans scored four more runs including Wright's two-run home run and Arjavich's solo shot. 

The 21-1 lead held through five comeplete innings as Castleton completed the two-game sweep of the Bucs.
