Buccaneers lose Double Overtime Thriller to Salem

Salem, Mass. – Salem State needed extra time for the second consecutive game to take the win over the Buccaneers. Orlando Rodrigues (Burlington, Mass.) netted the game-winner for the Vikings in double overtime for a 2-1 MASCAC win over MMA. Salem State received a corner in the 100th minute, which was taken by Lucas Amaral (Peabody, Mass.), who found Rodrigues for a header that reached athe back of the net.

The Vikings improve to (7-1) and (2-0) in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers fall to (1-5-1) and (0-2) in the conference.

In the 11th minute, Igor Caldas assisted Ryan Smith for a goal from ten yards out, giving Salem State a 1-0 lead. With two minutes left in the half, Adam Crawford (Kingston, Mass.) equalized the game at 1-1 with a low shot just out of goalie Christopher Jimenez's (Nashua, N.H.) reach.  

In the second half, both teams had opportunities to score, but couldn't covert those chances to goals. Mass Maritime dominated possession, controlling the tempo while attempting nine shots in the second half to Salem State's four.

For the Buccaneers, Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass) had three saves in the game on five Salem shots. Senior Brendan Gawron (Braintree, Mass) had five shots in the game, four on target but was unable to find the back of the net. Jimenez saved 13 shots with four of those coming in overtime to keep the Vikings alive.  

Next up for the Bucs will be a trip to Salve Regina in Newport, R.I. on Wednesday, September 26th at 3:30pm.
