BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam) notched a goal and a pair of assists for four points to lead UMass Boston to a 3-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday afternoon at Clark Athletic Field.
Johnson gave the host Beacons (10-5) an early 1-0 advantage with an unassisted marker just 15:40 into the contest, and he helped set up fellow junior Victor Hugo Costa’s (Malden, Mass.) tally with 4:39 remaining in the opening half to extend UMass Boston’s edge to 2-0 at the break. Senior Mike McCarthy (Norwell, Mass.) sliced the visiting Buccaneers’ (2-11-1) deficit in half with his second goal of the season on a feed from freshman Stuart Kinsman (Granville, Mass.) in the 71st minute of action, but sophomore Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass.) added an insurance marker just 2:26 later on feeds from Johnson and Costa to account for the final score.
Galouzis added an assist on Costa’s first half tally in the triumph for the Beacons, as junior Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Boston with a five-save effort. Sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made a pair of saves over the first 79-plus minutes of play in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as each team recorded 17 shots for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime closes out its 2011 campaign on Saturday afternoon by heading to Salem, Mass. to take on Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match that begins at 3:00 p.m., while UMass Boston closes out regular season play on Saturday afternoon by hosting Plymouth State in a Little East Conference match that begins at 1:00 p.m.
