Baseball: Bucs Split Saturday with Owls to win Conference Series

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Coming off of a series-opening win on the road over Westfield on Friday, 11-9, the Buccaneers hosted the Owls for a conference doubleheader on Saturday at Hendy Field. Maritime lost the first game of the day 3-2 and then won the series rubber match, 9-6, in a four home run thriller to win the conference series two games to one.

 

Game One

Westfield

  • Five different players had hits for the Owls.
  • Samuel Palmer, who's only hit was a home run, drove in two runs and scored twice. 
  • Nick Martin scored the third run in the win. 
  • Three players drew walks from Tinkham.

How It Happened

In the top of the first, Palmer homered off of Tinkham to give the Owls a 2-0 lead early on.

In the bottom of the second, Aten singled up the middle to bring Velzis around to score. Then, Luciano singled up the middle to bring Tropea in to score to tie the game at twos.

With the game tied in the top of the sixth, Ethan Day hit a ball to center field that got caught up in the wind causing Luciano to misplay it. The ball bounced over the fence for a ground rule double and brough Palmer in to score the go ahead and eventual winning run for Westfield. The Owls went on to win game one 3-2 and even the season series at a game apiece.

              Westfield (12-8, 4-2)

At The Plate

  • The Bucs strung together 12 hits in game two, three each from Brett Velzis and Michael Doyle
  • Six other Buccaneers had hits in the win.
  • Velzis, AJ Luciano, and Chris Perito each drove in two runs. 
  • Velzis, Doyle and Perito all scored twice. Perito drew two walks from Owls pitching
  • Doyle had a double to his credit while Velzis and Perito each went long in the win.

Westfield

  • Samuel Palmer and Max Silverman both had two hits. 
  • Ethan Day drove in three runs. Nick Martin plated two.
  • Nolan Florence and Trey Faulkner both had doubles.
  • Martin and Day both had home runs in the loss.

How It Happened

Maritime wasted no time getting out on top in game two, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, four of which came on two-run home runs by Velzis and Perito. The Bucs added a run on a double steal in the bottom of the second when Velzis got caught up between first and second allowing Sylvia to score to make it 6-0 Buccaneers.

Westfield got on the board in the third scoring two runs on Martin's home run. They added another run in the fifth to make it 6-3 bucs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Maritime scored three runs. One on a Doyle single to lead and two on a Luciano single to left. 

Down 9-3, the Owls got a three-run home run from Day in the top of the sixth to give them hope and keep them alive with two outs. Dean went on to strike out the next hitter to end the game and secure the 9-6 victory for the Buccaneers.

 

What's Next

Maritime will take on Fitchburg State in a conference doubleheader on Thursday and Friday, April 14th and 15th, with the first game on Thursday at home and the doubleheader at Fitchburg on Friday.
