Fograshy's Sixth Place Individual Finish Lifts Women's Cross Country To Third Place Team Standing At Travis Fuller Invitational

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams opened their respective seasons by earning trophies at the Fifth Annual Travis J. Fuller Invitational Saturday afternoon that was held alongside the Cape Cod Canal on campus.

The Buccaneer men's squad took top team honors in the event, posting a team score of 48 points to take their own invitational first place trophy for the 12th time in 13 years, as freshman Daniel McCloskey (Wakefield, R.I.) and junior Patrick Dannaher (Arlington, Va.) led the way by placing fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 28:54 and 28:55 over the five mile layout.  Junior Paul Matz (Plainville, Mass.) and freshman Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) were next in 10th and 12th place, respectively, with times of 29:37 and 30:04, while freshman Chad McCarthy (Sutton, Mass.) rounded out the Massachusetts Maritime scoring by placing 17th with a time of 30:25.

The Buccaneers also claimed the inaugural Maritime Cup by besting runner-up Merchant Marine's team score of 57 points, while Emmanuel was third in the final team standings with a score of 73 points.

On the women's side, Massachusetts Maritime posted a third place finish in the final team standings with a score of 90 points, as senior Lauren Fograshy (Monson, Mass.) led the way for the Buccaneers with a sixth place individual finish and a time of 21:19 over the 5K layout.  Senior Emily Rizzo (Milwaukee, Wis.) and freshman Devon Smith (Hull, Mass.) were next in 17th and 18th place, respectively, with times of 22:02 and 22:04, while senior Kaitlin O'Donnell (Damascus, Md.) and junior Meredith Hall (Duxbury, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with times of 22:49 and 23:25 that were good for 22nd and 27th place, respectively.

Emmanuel took the team title on the women's side with a score of 62 points, while Merchant Marine was second with a team score of 70 points to claim the inaugural Maritime Cup with the Buccaneers.

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads return to action next Saturday morning by heading to North Dartmouth, Mass. to participate in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational that begins at 10:00 a.m.
