Buccaneers Take Set in Loss to Saints

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Maritime volleyball hosted the Emmanuel Saints on Friday evening in non-conference play. After losing the first two sets, the Bucs screamed to a third set win then dropped the fourth set as the Saints won, 3-1.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Captain Marlo Stark led the Bucs offensively with 11 kills. 
  • Captain Shayla Narodowg recorded a team-high 20 assists in the loss and five service aces.
  • Audrey Manning led the way defensively with 23 digs and Stark recorded 13 of her own.
  • Sydney McCarthy and Chloe Johnson each had a solo block in the match and Johnson and Izabella Mackintosh combined for a block.
  • The Buccaneers recorded 28 kills and a .046 hitting percentage with 25 assists, 10 aces, 61 digs, and three total blocks. 

Emmanuel

  • Isabella Marquez led all players with 16 kills in the win.
  • Brigid Moriarty had 29 assists for the Saints in the match and led all players with six aces.
  • Defensively, Marquez racked up 26 digs with Paula Tanguilig tallying 20 of her own. 
  • The Saints combined for two blocks with four players receiving blocking assists.
  • Emmanuel recorded 48 kills and a .206 hitting percentage with 44 assists, 17 aces, 78 digs, and two blocks.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers came out flat in the first set as the Saints ran out to an 8-2 lead early. The Bucs tried to get back into the game but Emmanuel kept extending their lead, up by eight halfway through the game, 16-8. Maritime scored seven of the next 11 points to bring the game to a 20-15 tally but the Saints went on a 5-0 run at the end of the game to win the game, 25-15, and take a 1-0 match lead.

In the second set, the Saints led 5-1 early on until the Bucs put together a three-point run and only trailed by two, 6-4. Maritime tied the game up at 10-10 and had life as they kept the game within three points up to a 14-11 Saints lead. From there, Emmanuel took control of the game and went on an 11-3 run to win the game 25-14 and take a 2-0 match lead.

In set three, the Bucs did not lead the Saints march in as Narodowg went on a 10-0 run with the serve to give the Buccaneers a commanding lead in the third game. Emmanuel chipped away at the deficit early but trailed 18-7 going into the latter stages of the third set. The Bucs took their foot off the gas for a moment and the Saints took advantage. With the Bucs leading 20-10, the Saints rattled off seven straight points cutting the deficit to three points, 20-17. Eventually, the visitors tied the game at 21-21 but the Buccaneers were not about to be swept on their home court, scoring four of the final six points to win the set, 25-23, and bring the match to 2-1.

Emmanuel took a 4-0 lead in the fourth set that the Buccaneers quickly brought back to a one-point lead, 5-4. At 8-6 Emmanuel, the Saints pulled away and took a 13-7 lead. Maritime battled to get the game back to 15-13 but the Saints went on to score 10 of the next 14 points to win the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
