Volleyball Takes First Set in 3-1 Loss to SUNY Maritime

BRONX, N.Y. – The Buccaneers closed out the ninth annual Maritime Classic with a match against this year's hosts, SUNY Maritime. After falling 3-0 in both of their matches of the weekend, the Buccaneers came out hot against the Privateers taking the first set, 25-19. From there, the Privateers grabbed the next three sets, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-12 to take the 3-1 victory. Following the match, Buccaneers junior Marie Harrison (Wymouth, Mass) was named to the Ninth Annual Maritime Classic All-Tournament Team.

For the Bucs, Jen Roy (Attleboro, Mass) led the team with nine kills in the match. Harrison had six kills while Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass) added five of her own. Following her four service aces against Maine Maritime, Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass) served up three more against the Privateers. Freshman setter, Bianca Andronic (Somerset, Mass) compiled a match-high 14 digs to help the Bucs. Sophomore Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn) led the team with 22 assists.

The Privateers Celyna Custodio led the match with 11 kills, Meghan Eagleton was right behind her with 10 more. Erika Kirchner led the match with 27 assists and added four service aces. Abigail Solomos had seven service assists of her own to lead the match.

Set one was the story for the Buccaneers in this match. They initially fell behind 4-0 to the Privateers before regaining momentum and tying the game at four. The teams would trade points until the score leveled at 12-12. That's when the Bucs took over the game and would never trail again, ultimately winning the set, 25-19 when Harrison made the set point kill.

Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, the next three sets would not go their way. Though, in set two, they kept it close all the way to the end losing by just four points, 25-21. Sets three and four were al Privateers who took the sets 25-15 and 25-12 to seal the 3-1 match win over the Buccaneers.

The Bucs are back on their home floor in the Clean Harbors Athletics Center on Wednesday evening at 7pm in MASCAC action against Bridgewater State.
