Elwood’s First Career Goal Helps Bucs Sink Raiders in Double Overtime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Buccaneers welcomed in the Rivier Raiders to Clean Harbors Stadium on Thursday evening. The game replaced one that was cancelled earlier in the week against another institution. This was the second meeting between the two teams in 2019, Rivier having won the first in Nashua, N.H. back in September 5-1. Thursday match-up ended 1-0 in favor of Bucs to split the season series.

The Basics

Final:

Records: Mass Maritime 3-12 (0-5 MASCAC)

                Rivier 2-12-2 (0-9-1 GNAC)

For The Bucs

  • Sophomore Shannon Elwood (Kingston, Mass) scored her first career goal to win the game for the Bucs in the 104th minute.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) saved all four shots she faced in the game.

For The Raiders

  • Rivier had four shots on goal in the game, two from the foot of Sami Blais (Nashua, N.H.).
  • Senior goalkeeper Kasey Smith (Hopkinton, N.H.) faced three Maritime shots, saving two and allowing the one goal.

How it Happened

The first half was relatively uneventful on both sides as the Buccaneers were unable to register a shot and the Raiders tallied two, one of which was on target. The first half ended with the teams knotted in a scoreless tie.

In the second half, the Bucs changed their tactics, moving up the field in to a more attacking formation. Between the teams there were 11 shots, five on target. The Bucs outshot the Raiders six to five overall while the Raiders put more shots on goal, three to one. Both goalies were on their toes in the second half but neither offense as able to take a high percentage shot. Though the game was much more up tempo in the second 45, the teams remained tied at zero after 90 minutes to send the game in to overtime.

Much like the second half, the first overtime period features an intense Maritime attack. The ball was in the attacking third for the Bucs for the majority of the 10 minutes but the team was unable to take a shot while also not allowing the Raiders to get a shot on Albertson. After 100 minutes of play, the game remained tied at 0-0 and the teams headed toa second overtime period.

In the second overtime, Rivier took the ball up field at the start of the period but were quickly countered by the Bucs. Less than four minutes in the Buccaneers attacked up the right side. On a ball in to the box there was a collision between Rivier defenders and Maritime attackers. The ball rolled behind Smith where Elwood was waiting to tap the ball in to the back of the net to claim a 1-0 victory for the Bucs.
