Buccaneers Shutout on Bear’s Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Eight different players scored as the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 9-0 victory over visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 7-5-2 on the season and 4-1-1 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers fall to 2-12 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Senior forward Delaney Langton (Scituate, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals, while junior forward Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) notched a goal and three assists to pace the BSU offensive.

Senior midfielders Kellsie Mitchell (Bristol, R.I.) and Nicole Simas (Dartmouth, Mass.), and senior defender Caitlin Rowley (Lakeville, Mass.) each added a goal and an assist for the Bears, while senior midfielder Allison Lima (Fairhaven, Mass.), senior forward Taylor Loyd (Halifax, Mass.) and junior forward Amelia Burke(Plymouth, Mass.) also scored. Senior midfielder Melissa Morton (Uxbridge, Mass.) checked in with a pair of assists.

BSU junior goalkeeper Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) made four saves to record her seventh win of the season and first career shutout.

Mitchell opened the scoring in the 16th minute as she picked off an attempted clearance by the Mass. Maritime netminder and ripped a shot over the keeper's head from 29 yards out. The goal marked her third of the season.

Langton knocked home the rebound of a Sanders' shot in the 38th minute to extend the BSU advantage to 2-0.

Loyd scored on a breakaway off a nice feed from junior forward Tess Nagle (Pembroke, Mass.) to make it a 3-0 game 2:36 into the second half. Loyd dribbled in from 45 yards out and fired a shot inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season. Mitchell picked up the secondary assist as she forced the turnover that led to the scoring opportunity.

Lima potted her first collegiate goal in the 55th minute to give the Bears a 4-0 lead. Lima headed home a corner kick sent into the box by Sanders.

Sanders converted a deflected crossing pass from Morton in the 65th minute for Bridgewater State's fifth tally. Sanders drove the ball into the left side of the cage from eight yards out for her fifth goal of the 2018 campaign.

Just 1:40 later, Langton tapped home a goal line crossing pass from Sanders with Simas picking up the secondary assist. The goal marked Langton's fourth of the year.

Simas scored on a breakaway in the 72nd minute as she tucked a shot inside the left post for her team-leading sixth marker of the season. Rowley added an unassisted tally, her first of the season, on nice individual effort with a shot inside the right post in the 80th minute to give the Bears an 8-0 lead.

Burke capped of the scoring with her third goal of the year in the 85th minute as she tapped in a crossing pass sent into the six by Morton. Rowley also assisted on the goal.

Bridgewater State finished with a decided 41-7 shot advantage as well as a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. The Bears were also flagged 19 times for offside.

Senior goalkeeper Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass.) faced 24 shots on goal and made 15 saves in the setback for the Buccaneers.

Prior to the game, the Bears honored Lima, Loyd, Mitchell, Morton, Rowley and fellow seniors Kassidy Campbell (Norton, Mass.), Abby Haefner (Lakeville, Mass.) and Molly Shield (Mansfield, Mass.).

Both teams are back in action with non-conference games on Tuesday night at seven. The Bears entertain the Beacons of UMass Boston, while the Buccaneers host the Rams of Suffolk University.
