FINAL: SALEM STATE 7, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2
SALEM, Mass. -- Sophomore Casey McFall (Wilmington, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead Salem State to a 7-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
McFall staked the host Vikings (2-4-1, 1-1 MASCAC) to a 1-0 advantage just 3:03 into the match, but junior Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass.) evened matters for the visiting Buccaneers (2-4, 0-2 MASCAC) just 20 seconds later. McFall gave Salem State the lead for good with her second of the match just 3:12 later, and that tally began a string of six unanswered markers for the hosts, as goals by junior Ashley Leboeuf (Dracut, Mass.), sophomore Keely Gallagher (Middleton, Mass.) and freshman Emily Boyle (Manchester, N.H.) in the 12th, 34th and 37th minutes, respectively, increased the Vikings’ edge to 5-1 at the break. Tallies by junior Kaitlyn Curley (Wilmington, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Brown (Milford, Mass.) that came 69 seconds apart midway through the second half extended Salem State’s advantage, and Taylor second of the contest and 10th of the season on a feed from freshman Anna Deely (Marstons Mills, Mass.) in the 63rd minute accounted for the final margin.
Boyle finished with a goal and an assist on the day for the Vikings, who also received a helper from sophomore Meg McFarland (Dedham, Mass.). Junior Amanda Backe (Danvers, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Salem State by making a pair of saves, while sophomore Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) made eight stops over the first 45 minutes of play in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which received three second half saves from freshman Mikayla Houlihan (Middleboro, Mass.). The Vikings outshot the Buccaneers by a 25-5 margin overall and took all eight corner kicks in the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference clash on Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Salem State entertains UMass Boston in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field that begins at 7:00 p.m.
