BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Nicole Newell (Plymouth, Mass.) netted her first career hat trick to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 7-0 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Wheelock Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Freshman Lauren Salem (Westfield, Mass.) added her first collegiate goal and a pair of assists in the triumph for the host Buccaneers (2-4) in the highest scoring output in the three-year varsity history of the program.  Junior Kerri Conway (West Springfield, Mass.) gave Massachusetts Maritime the only goal it would need in the 20th minute of play on Salem’s feed, and tallies by Newell and Salem in the 23rd and 27th minutes, respectively, that were both set up by senior Stephanie Lee (Acton, Mass.) staked the hosts to a 3-0 advantage at the break.  Newell completed her hat trick with unassisted goals in the 52nd and 71st minutes of play for the Buccaneers, as those tallies sandwiched a pair of markers by freshman Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.) in the 57th minute on a feed from sophomore Laura Spalt (Harwichport, Mass.) and in the 64th minute on a crossing pass from Salem to account for the final score.

Newell’s hat trick was the second in program history, as she joined Lee, who netted three markers in a 4-0 season-opening win at Becker on September 8th, in accomplishing that feat.  Sophomore Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) picked up her second win and second career shutout in goal with one save on the night for Massachusetts Maritime, while junior Alexandra Chiesa (Medford, Mass.) made 19 stops in net in the setback for the visiting Wildcats (0-7), as the Buccaneers also set a school record by recording 33 of the 34 total shots in the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Wheelock entertains Becker in a New England Collegiate Conference clash on Saturday afternoon in Boston that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
