BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Freshman Jill Kelly (Highland Mills, N.Y.) set up a pair of goals as four different players tallied in leading Coast Guard to a 4-0 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Freshman Ainsley Stringfield (Severn, Md.) gave the visiting Bears (4-3) the only marker they would need 6:40 into the contest off a Kelly corner, and junior Angela Ingram (Laguna Beach, Calif.) converted Kelly’s second feed of the night just 16 seconds into the second half to extend the lead to 2-0. Junior Shannah Shelton’s (Upper Marlboro, Md.) goal in the 81st minute on an assist from fellow junior Brittany Fifer (Camp Lejeune, N.C.) gave Coast Guard a 3-0 edge, and freshman Kristin Euchler’s (Clarksburg, Mass.) unassisted tally with 2:27 remaining iced the triumph for the visitors.
Junior Mary Mills (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up the win in goal with six saves over the first 80-plus minutes of action for Coast Guard, while sophomore Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) made eight stops in net in the setback for the host Buccaneers (1-3) in their home opener, as the Bears outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 15-11 margin for the match, including a 12-2 advantage in the final 45 minutes of action.
Massachusetts Maritime travels to Westfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that begins at Noon, while Coast Guard heads to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to square off with WPI in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match that begins at 1:00 p.m.
