NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior Katie Kurek (Williamstown, N.J.) netted a hat trick, while freshman Lydia Roets (Watertown, Wis.) added a pair of goals to lead Coast Guard to a 7-0 non-league college women's soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.
Kurek completed her hat trick in the opening 12:49 of play for the host Bears (1-4), while Roets collected her markers in a 1:11 span as Coast Guard jumped out to a 5-0 advantage at the break. Sophomore Shannah Shelton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and freshman Katie Romas (Silverdale, Wash.) each added second half goals to go with a pair of assists for the winners, who also received single assists from sophomores Brittany Fifer (Camp Lejeune, N.C.) and Erin Nolan (Lafayette, Ind.).
Sophomore Mary Mills (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up the win in goal with one save on the afternoon for Coast Guard, while freshmen Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.), who had four saves, and Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.), who made 11 saves, combined for 15 stops in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (0-4) as the Bears had 31 of the 32 shots for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime opens MASCAC play on Saturday afternoon by hosting Salem State in a league outing at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at Noon, while Coast Guard entertains Mitchell in a non-league match on Wednesday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field beginning at 4:30 p.m.
