BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Brigitte Calhoun's (Micco, Fla.) goal 3:50 into the second overtime lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-2 non-league college women's soccer victory over Wheelock Tuesday evening at Commander Ellis Field.
Calhoun converted a rebound of a shot by freshman Rebecca Luciani (Wakefield, Mass.) for her first collegiate marker that gave the Buccaneers (2-6) the second triumph of their inaugural varsity season of play. Massachusetts Maritime grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute of play on freshman Kerri Conway's (West Springfield, Mass.) breakaway tally, but the visiting Wildcats (2-7-1) evened matters with 2:21 remaining in the half when junior Lindsey Lacourse (Scarborough, Maine) converted a feed from freshman Kimberly Rogers (Derby, Conn.). Lacourse gave Wheelock a 2-1 advantage with an unassisted marker 4:15 into the second half, but Luciani forced the extra session for the Buccaneers by converting a pass from Conway with 8:08 to play in regulation for her second goal of the season, setting up Calhoun's heroics in the second overtime period.
Freshman Emily Welsh (Shelton, Conn.) picked up her second win of the season in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with an 11-save effort, while sophomore Victoria Fernandes (Randolph, Mass.) made five stops in net for Wheelock as the Buccaneers outshot the Wildcats by an 18-14 margin for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA in a MASCAC outing on Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 4:30 p.m., while Wheelock hosts UMass Boston in a non-league match on Thursday evening in Boston beginning at 8:00 p.m.
