Buccaneers Ground Hawks for Fourth Straight Win

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Coming off of a 20-0 victory over Anna Maria College on Monday night, and their third win in as many games, the Buccaneers hosted Becker College at Clean Harbors Stadium. The game did not disappoint those who braved the cold and wind as there were 24 total goals scored and the hosts came away with a 16-8 victory.

Sophomore attacker Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass) scored six goals in the game, tied for game high with fellow sophomore attacker, Anna Deely (Masrtons Mills, Mass), and Sullivan became the third highest points getter, goals plus assists, in program history when she scored her third goal of the game, early in the second half. Deely also had two assists to go along with her six goals, Sullivan added one assist to the score line. Junior Cammie Balentine (Haverhill, Mass) scored the other four goals for the Bucs and assisted on another goal. Senior Captain Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass) had an assist as well in the contest. Defensively, Sarah Smialek (Dartmouth, Mass) and Sullivan each had two caused turnovers on the night to lead the Bucs. Freshman Goalie Laura Kleber (Westport, Mass) had the best game in her young career. After not facing a shot since March 16th, three games ago, Kleber stopped 10 of 18 shots she saw from the Hawks to pick up her, and the team's, fifth victory of the season.

Becker were led offensively by Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass) with four goals and an assist. Bianca Lancia (Checshire, Mass) scored twice for the visitors and added an assist. Defensively, Kylian Kelly (Schrewsbury, Mass) had a game high five caused turnovers. Between the pipes, goalie Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine) saw an astounding 30 Buccaneers shots and made 14 saves in the game.

Knowing the Hawks were not going to lay down, coming in to the game 3-0, the Buccaneers knew they had to come out firing on offense and they did just that, scoring three unanswered goals in the first six minutes of the game. Becker's Arianna Calouro (East Providence, R.I.) broke the Maritime scoring spree with a goals of her own to bring her team within two with 20 minutes left in the first half. Deely scored her second on the night just over two minutes later to bring the lead back out to three. For the remaining 18:0 minutes of the half, Becker took over the game offensively and defensively, erasing the three goal lead and taking the lead with a four goal unanswered run to end the half up 5-4 on their hosts.

In the second half, the Buccaneers regained the momentum, though it took nearly five minutes before they tied the game up on Deely's third goal of the night. Sullivan scored less than a minute later on an assist from Deely to retake the lead, which Maritime did not look back from this time around. They scored two more unanswered goals before Becker could answer. Ultimately, the Buccaneers were too much, going on another unanswered run, this time five goals, and another three goal run to end the game after Becker inched back by scoring two goals late in the half. Sullivan's goal just before the 25 minute mark would prove to be the game winner as the Bucs extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 5-3 on the year.

Up next for the Buccaneers is a home game on Thursday, March 28th against Dean College at 7pm.
