Women’s Lacrosse Ready to Attack 2019

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Last season, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy women's lacrosse team posted their highest win total in the programs seven year history finishing the 6-9. Third year head coach, Marc Palombo is no stranger to helping make Buccaneer teams successful. A 1978 graduate of the Academy, Palombo played on the men's lacrosse team from 1975 to 1978 and is now in the Maritime athletic hall of fame. In his first year as head coach, his team finished 2-10 followed by the aforementioned 6-9 2018 season.

The team returns 13 players from 2018 and added six freshman to the squad. Some notable returners for the Bucs are now senior captains, defender Meghan Petruzziello (Malden, Mass) and defender Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass). Last season Petruzziello scored eight goals on just 16 shots on goal while also tallying two assists. Overstreet, who was studying abroad in China last season, scored eight goals in six games in 2017. Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass) returns for her sophomore season leading the Bucs with 50 goals in 2018, fourth best in the MASCAC. Her 50 goals and seven assists earned her MASCAC Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference in 2018. Sullivan was not alone on the attack last season. Freshman and two-sport student-athlete, Anna Deely (Marstons Mills, Mass) totaled 32 goals, third best on the team behind now graduate Stephanie Hunt who scored 36. Deely ranked second on the team, behind Hunt, in caused turnovers with 19 on the year.

The Buccaneers have one goalie on the roster for 2019, freshman Laura Kleber (Westport, Mass), who will start in goal for the Bucs after four year starter, Mikayla Correia graduated following the 2018 season. Correia has returned to the team as an assistant coach to help coach her replacement between the pipes and recruit future student-athletes.

The Buccaneers have 17 game on their schedule with 12 homes dates and 5 away dates. The team will play a seven game MASCAC schedule. The season begins with the team's home opener, a Saturday matinée against UMass-Dartmouth on March 2nd at 12pm. Following the opener Mass Maritime will host the annual Maritime Classic. This year, it is the Buccaneers turn to host the other two regional Maritime institutions, Maine Maritime and SUNY Maritime. Last year the team won the Maritime Classic at SUNY Maritime in Throggs Neck, N.Y. The Bucs will face Maine Maritime on Friday, March 8th and SUNY Maritime on Sunday, March 10th. Maine and SUNY will face off on Saturday, March 9th.

Following the Maritime Classic, the Bucs take to the road for their first of five road games when they travel to Rhode Island College on Thursday, March 14th.

After RIC, the team returns home for five non-conference games, including matchups with the Merchant Marine Academy, and Dean College.

The Buccaneers close out the month of March with the beginning of conference play against Fitchburg State on the road on the 30th.

April begins with a MASCAC matchup with Worcester State on the 5th at home which is followed by the team's final non-conference game of the season in Vermont against Southern Vermont College.

The squad's final five games of the season will be against conference opponents, including MCLA, the only conference team the Buccaneers have beaten, 4-0 all-time, since 2014 when they beat Framingham State. The only other conference team the Bucs have beaten is Elms, who is no longer in the same conference, in 2012.
