Poh, Soar Lead Outdoor Track & Field To 11 Top Five Finishes At Eastern Connecticut Invitational

MANSFIELD, Conn. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team recorded 11 top five finishes in respective individual events on Friday afternoon at the Eastern Connecticut Invitational, as the Buccaneer men placed fourth and the women’s squad finished seventh in the final overall team standings in the competition.

 

Junior Zachary Poh (Bridgewater, Mass.) posted another impressive performance on the men’s side, as he took top honors in the discus (44.60 meters), placed third in the javelin (42.40 meters) and added a pair of fifth place finishes in the shot put (12.14 meters) and hammer throw (38.98 meters).  Sophomore Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, R.I.) notched the top individual performance in the hammer throw (41.92 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime, while freshman Peter Hamill (Norton, Mass.) finished as the runner-up in the javelin (45.53).

 

Freshman Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) posted a third place finish in the women’s javelin with a mark of 31.18 meters, while junior Anthony Downs (West Roxbury, Mass.) and freshman Alex Fraser (Walpole, Mass.) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000 meters with times of 20:03.50 and 20:39.38.  Senior Ted Mello (Acushnet, Mass.) finished fifth in the triple jump (11.71 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a fifth place performance in the hammer throw (32.59 meters) and a seventh place effort in the javelin (28.47 meters) from junior Danielle Soar (Templeton, Mass.).

 

Junior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) placed sixth in the 400 meter high hurdles (1:00.27) and seventh in the 110 meter high hurdles (17.04) for the Buccaneers, who also received sixth place performances from juniors Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) in the 400 meters (53.17) and Cody Carneiro (Wrentham, Mass.) in the javelin (39.37 meters).  Senior Steven Ellershaw (Chester, Mass.) finished seventh in the javelin (38.83 meters) on the afternoon, while senior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.), sophomore Brendan Smith (Dartmouth, Mass.) and freshman Tyler Aldrich (Mashpee, Mass.) added respective eighth place performances in the 5,000 meters (22:37.28), 110 meter high hurdles (17.91) and 1,500 meters (4:57.81). 

 

The Buccaneer men’s 4 x 100 relay team consisting of Mello, Hill, Smith and freshman Luke Kurelja (Bloomsburg, Pa.) finished fourth with a time of 45.03, while the 4 x 400 relay squad of Hill, Kurelja, Mbengam and freshman Andrew Gulino (Attleboro, Mass.) also notched a fourth place time of 3:36.88.  Bridgewater State took top honors in both the men’s and women’s competition on the day.

 

Massachusetts Maritime returns to The Nutmeg State next Saturday, April 19th, as the Buccaneers travel to New London, Conn. to compete at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational that begins at 9:00 a.m.
