BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Lauren Garchinsky (Saugus, Mass.) rapped out five hits and drove in five runs to lead Salem State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 14-0 in the opener and 18-7 in the nightcap in five inning contests played Saturday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Vikings (10-8, 3-1 MASCAC) used an 11-run outburst in their opening at-bat of the day to take control of the twinbill, as Garchinsky collected four hits and was joined by freshman Cara Crowley (Lynn, Mass.) in driving in four runs in the lid-lifter.  Sophomore Jenn Touissant (Reading, Mass.) added two hits and a pair of RBI as well for the winners, who also received two hits off the bat of senior Sarra Bergeron (Methuen, Mass.) in support of senior Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, Mass.), who fired a two-hitter and struck out 10 inside the circle to improve to 7-2 on the season.  Senior Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) and freshman Taylor Winkler (Staten Island, N.Y.) each recorded singles in the opening game setback for the host Buccaneers (0-6, 0-4 MASCAC), as senior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) fanned a pair in falling to 0-3 on the spring.

Salem State struck for five runs in the opening inning of the nightcap, and after Massachusetts Maritime cut that margin to 5-3 in the second on RBI singles by Beaulieu and senior Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) that followed freshman Brittany Driscoll’s (Spencer, Mass.) sacrifice fly, the Vikings broke things open with a six-run third inning rally that was highlighted by Bryan’s two-run triple before adding five more in the fourth to complete the sweep.

Bryan rapped out three hits and drove in three for Salem State, which collected 15 hits in the nightcap and combined for 28 safeties on the afternoon.  Senior Christina Cipriani (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Rebecca Krigman (Malden, Mass.) also had three hits in the second outing for the Vikings in support of junior Brittney Howe (Winchendon, Mass.), who struck out three over four innings to earn her second win of the season.  Senior Erin Eastman (Harwich, Mass.) collected two hits, including a three-run double, as part of nine-hit nightcap attack for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received three hits from freshman Alyssa Lebo (Oklahoma City, Okla.).  Freshman Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.) went the distance inside the circle for the Buccaneers, striking out a pair in falling to 0-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Emmanuel in a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Salem State hosts Endicott in a non-league twinbill on Tuesday afternoon in Salem, Mass. that begins at 4:00 p.m.
