SALEM, Mass. --  Senior Amanda Scola (Leominster, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in five runs to lead Salem State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon by scores of 9-0 in the opener and 16-0 in the nightcap in games played at Alumni Field.

Sophomore Michelle Grifoni’s (Peabody, Mass.) two-run first inning single staked the host Vikings (22-5-1, 5-1 MASCAC) to an early lead in the opener, and RBI doubles by Scola and senior Jess Baird (Worcester, Mass.) extended that lead to 5-0 in the second.  Scola’s second run-scoring two-bagger of the contest capped a two-run fourth frame for Salem State, and sophomore pitcher Katelynn Fanning helped seal her 11th win in 14 decisions on the season with a two-run single in the fifth inning to close out the scoring.  Scola and Grifoni each had two of the Vikings’ eight hits in the opener, as Fanning tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 inside the Salem State circle.  The visiting Buccaneers (2-16, 0-8 MASCAC) received singles in the opening contest from freshman Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) and Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.), who allowed seven earned runs and fanned a pair in suffering the setback on the Massachusetts Maritime mound.

Salem State took control of the nightcap with an eight-run uprising in its first at-bat, as Scola drove in three runs in the frame with a double and a two-run single for the Vikings, who plated two more tallies in both the second third innings and iced its triumph with four runs in the fourth frame.  Freshman Erica Batchelder (Stoughton, Mass.) added a three-run double for the winners, who also received and hit and an RBI each from Grifoni, senior Katie Oram (Lynn, Mass.), junior Taylor Orlando (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman Christina Cipriani (Peabody, Mass.) as well as two RBI off the bat of Baird.  Freshman Sarra Bergeron (Methuen, Mass.) went the distance in tossing a three-hitter and fanning six to improve to 8-1 inside the circle for Salem State, while Thibeault, Beaulieu and sophomore Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.) each recorded singles in the nightcap setback for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Newbury in a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Salem State hosts Curry in a non-league twinbill on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field that begins at 4:00 p.m.
