BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --  Senior Meghan Noyes (Stoughton, Mass.) rapped out six hits and drove in four runs to lead Bridgewater State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Thursday afternoon by scores of 14-2 in the opener and 19-1 in the nightcap in games played at Alumni Park.

The host Bears (17-18, 8-4 MASCAC) jumped out to a 7-1 second inning lead in the opener and iced its first game triumph with seven more runs over the course of the next two frames, as Noyes and sophomore Michaela Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.) each had two of Bridgewater State’s nine hits in the contest.  Senior Lauren Cucinotta (Franklin, Mass.), sophomore Stephanie Burns (North Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, Mass.) joined Ferreira with an RBI each in support of junior Tracey Sanko (Windsor, Conn.), who allowed a hit and a run over 3 2/3 innings of work while fanning four to improve to 4-1 inside the circle for the hosts.  The visiting Buccaneers (2-22, 0-12 MASCAC) used an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.) to take a 1-0 first inning lead in the opener, and an infield single by freshman Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) plated the other tally of the first contest for Massachusetts Maritime.  McLaughlin supported her own cause with two hits in the opener for the visitors, as she allowed seven earned runs and fanned one in going the distance on the mound.

Noyes led a 17-hit attack with a 4-for-4 effort while driving in four in the nightcap for the Bears, who also received three hits and three RBI from freshman Melissa Harmon (Shrewsbury, Mass.) as well as a three-run triple off the bat of Cucinotta.  Freshman Brianna Strecker (Waterford, Conn.) collected four RBI on a pair of hits as well for Bridgewater State, which used a 12-run second inning outburst en route to completing the sweep, while freshman Kaitlyn Lang (Norwood, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs for the winners.  Sanko and sophomore Jordan McDermott (East Bridgewater, Mass.) added two hits each for the hosts in support of senior Jamie Ducinski (Duxbury, Mass.), who allowed four hits and an unearned run while striking out six to pick up her fifth win of the season.  Senior Jess O’Meara’s (Stoneham, Mass.) RBI double in the top of the first staked the Buccaneers again to the early edge in the nightcap, as she collected two of the four hits for the visitors in the second contest.  Sophomore Libby Buck (South Chatham, Mass.) added a single as well for Massachusetts Maritime, as Johnson also collected a hit and went the distance in her collegiate pitching debut for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime closes out its 2010 schedule on Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers head to Westfield, Mass. to take on Westfield State in a MASCAC doubleheader that begins at Noon, while Bridgewater State closes out its regular season slate on Saturday afternoon by traveling to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State in a MASCAC twinbill that also begins at Noon.
