Young Maritime Sailors Best Minutemen, Terriers at Southern Series

KINGSTON, R.I. – Competing once more against boats representing Division-I universities, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy sailing team finished sixth out of eight universities at the University of Rhode Island's Southern Series, despite the Buccaneers sending squads to three different regattas over the weekend.

One of only two D-III programs in the regatta, the Buccaneers A Division pairing of skipper Maya Stephani and crew Will Tagliamonte had a strong start, holding on to fourth place overall after two races, finishing in fifth at the end of the day. A sophomore, Stephani was the only Maritime sailor not in his or her first season of college sailing.

"We arrived around 10:30 to find a fully furnished indoor clubhouse to change in," noted first-year Maritime sailor Maeve Glancy. "The venue had around 18 new FJs in generally excellent condition with newer sails."

Glancy skippered for Rachel McKeown and the duo recovered from a tough first race to finish sixth on the day.

"The area sailed in was about a 20-minute sail through a narrow channel to a more open bay area still surrounded by land on all sides," explained Glancy. "The day started and ended sunny and relatively warm.

"All races were W-3s or W-4s, and the wind started light, built and piqued around 3 o'clock before slowly settling down again. It was gusty, with crews having to range from sitting low to hiking hard. It was better to stay left on the course, as the bay was slightly more open, less windy, and less shifty."

The Buccaneers finished with a final score of 166, ahead of UMass-Amherst at 183 and Boston University's 272. The host Rams sailed three different teams, which claimed the top three places with 69, 74, and 94 points respectively. Salve Regina (115) and Brown University (139) claimed the two places above Maritime.
