Hakkarainen and Hansen top finishers for Maritime in Westfield

WESTFIELD, Mass – Men's and women's cross country took part in the James Early Invitational this weekend at Westfield State University. Large fields led to a 23rd place finish for the women and a 26th place finish for the men. Both races consisted of 28 teams.

Sophomore Lily Hakkarainen (Chesterfield, N.H.) led the Bucs with a 114th place finish, earning 103 points, with a final time of 21:32.39. She averaged 6:56.0 per mile. Sarah Smialek (Dartmouth, Mass) finished 161st, second for the Bucs, with a final time of 23:19.49. Freshman Alyssa Greico (Andover, Mass) was the third place finisher in 177th for Maritime with a time of 24:30.92. Freshman Sue Bird (Duxbury, Mass) finished three spots behind Greico in 181st with a final time of 24:57.46. Senior Erica Parziale (Hudson, N.H.) rounded out the scoring places for the Bucs, finishing 208th at 27:34.89. The Buccaneer placed runners finished with a total time of 2:01:55. 15 in 23rd place finishing ahead of Nichols, Curry, St. Joseph's (Conn), Western Connecticut and Hudson Valley Community College.

On the men's side, The Buccaneers finished in 26th place, ahead of Elms and Northern Essex Community College. Junior Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass) finished 116th overall, first for Maritime with a time of 29:36.13 on the 8k meter course. Finishing 154th, 156th and 158th were sophomore Alex Imperillo (Chelmsford, Mass) with a time of 31:06.76, freshman Michael Fappiano-Puttre (New Ipswich, Mass) at 31:11.90 and senior captain Steven Savoy (West Bridgewater, Mass) with a final time of 31:20.14. Rounding out the scoring places for the Bucs in 163rd was freshman Ben Tuttle (Barre, Mass) finishing in 31:40.78.

The Buccaneers are at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass next weekend for a race hosted by Suffolk University.
