Bucs and Bison Draw by the Bay

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Buccaneers (1-3-2) hosted Nichols College (2-2-1) in non-conference play on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium. The game marked the second home game of the season for the Buccaneers who drew with Suffolk in their first home game of the season last Friday night. First half goal by each team in tonight's game was all the scoring that was had, ending the game in a 1-1 draw after regulation and two overtime periods.

For the Bucs, Sophomore Shane MacNeil (Braintree, Mass) scored the only buccaneer goal of the evening in the seventh minute. He scored on a header from a crossed ball by Andrew Wayrynen (Rockport, Mass) who was credited with the assist. It was Wayrynen's second assist of the season. Maritime took 20 shots in the game with just six on target. Goalkeeper Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass) faced 14 Bison shots, making 13 saves and allowing one goal.

Nichols freshman Nikolas Padilla (Worcester, Mass) scored the only Bison goal in the 36th minute on a breakaway opportunity that was started by sophomore Evan Lemoine (Rutland, Mass) on a through ball pass up the right side that went right to the foot of Padilla. Lemoine picked up the assist on the goal. In total, Nichols took 33 shots in the game, 14 of which were on target. Goalkeeper Juan Carlos De La Cruz (Stamford, Conn) faced the six Maritime shots, making five saves and allowing the one goal.

With two goals scored, the first half was a thriller as both teams came out attacking from the first whistle. The Bucs controlled much of the play early and were able to break through in the seventh minute on the cross from Wayrynen on to the head of MacNeil and he was able to find the back of the net to put the Buccaneers up 1-0. Nichols outshot the Bucs 13-7 in the first half, including the goal by Padilla. The run began on a counter attack by the Bison in which Lemoine came down the right side of the field. Catching the Buc defense on their heels, Lemoine fired a pass to the middle of the field, finding Padilla who dribbled past the keeper and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute. Both teams stayed on the attack for the remainder of the first half, neither being able to score. After 45 minutes of the play the teams were tied at one apiece.

In the second half, Nichols continued their barrage of Hardy with 14 shots to Maritime's six. Both teams kept the match exciting attacking at on every possible opportunity. But, unlike the first half, the second half saw missed opportunities and good defense on both ends of the field. After 90 minutes of play the teams remained tied at 1-1.

In overtime, with the golden goal rule in effect, both teams continued to take their shots in the two 10 minute periods. Each team had two shots in the first overtime period and Maritime outshot the Bison in the second overtime period, 5-4. Once again, both teams had their foot down on the gas pedal but were unable to break the tie eventually ending the game in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of play.

Next up for the Buccaneers is a non-conference matchup with WPI on Saturday, September 14th at 12pm at Clean Harbors Stadium. The game against WPI is the final tune-up for the Bucs before MASCAC play begins on September 20th against Worcester State.
