BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Seniors Robbie Pacini (Stoneham, Mass.) and Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass.) each netted goals to lift Fitchburg State to a 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Pacini gave the visiting Falcons (2-9, 1-3 MASCAC) a 1-0 advantage just 7:34 into the contest when he converted a rebound off a shot by freshman Carmen Bordonaro (Saugus, Mass.), and Ventura provided what proved to be an important insurance marker (his fifth of the season) with an unassisted tally in the 53rd minute that extended Fitchburg State’s lead to 2-0. Senior Jon White (Lynnfield, Mass.) sliced the host Buccaneers’ (4-8, 0-4 MASCAC) deficit in half by converting a feed from sophomore Adam Vieira (New Bedford, Mass.) for his second goal of the season in the 78th minute, but Massachusetts Maritime was unable to net the equalizer despite having 12 shots in the final 45 minutes of play.
Senior Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Fitchburg State with a seven-save effort, while freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made four stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Falcons overall by a 16-10 margin for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State hosts WPI in a non-league match on Thursday evening at Elliot Field in Fitchburg, Mass. that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
