NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior Frank Hackett’s (Marshfield, Mass.) penalty kick conversion 2:20 into the second half lifted Coast Guard to a 1-0 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday evening at Cadet Memorial Field.
After a scoreless first half of play, Hackett was fouled inside the box in the early stages following intermission for the host Bears (4-3-1), as his tally proved to be the lone marker of the contest and made a winner of senior Chris Tarbell (Haddonfield, N.J.), who did not have to record a save in goal to pick up his third shutout of the season for Coast Guard.
Freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made four stops in net in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (2-6), as the Bears outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 10-7 margin for the contest, including a 6-2 edge over the final 45 minutes of action.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Anna Maria in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Coast Guard entertains Springfield in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match-up on Friday evening at Cadet Memorial Field that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
