BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Goals by senior Brian Reske (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Bridgewater State Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.
The triumph was the first for the visiting Buccaneers (6-10, 2-4 MASCAC) over the host Bears (10-4, 4-2 MASCAC) since a 1-0 victory during the 1991 season and snapped a 19-match winless skein (0-18-1) that included a 1-1 draw during the 2003 campaign. The result also kept Massachusetts Maritime’s conference playoff hopes alive and knocked defending regular season champion Bridgewater State out of a first place tie in the league standings.
Reske converted a feed from fellow senior Andrew Mullen (Bridgewater, Mass.) for his first goal of the season with 6:48 remaining in the opening half to stake the Buccaneers to a 1-0 advantage, and Young took a pass from junior Dennis Doherty (West Falmouth, Mass.) just 2:04 after intermission to extend that margin to 2-0 with his fourth marker of the fall. The score remained that way until the closing minute of action when junior Mike Fraser (Marshfield, Mass.) converted feeds from senior Mark Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) and junior Dan Roberts (Braintree, Mass.) for his sixth goal of the season with just 23 seconds to play for the Bears to spoil the shutout.
Freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) picked up his fourth win of the season with a seven-save effort in goal for Massachusetts Maritime, while junior D.J. Siewierski (Stow, Mass.) made three stops in the setback for Bridgewater State as the Bears outshot the Buccaneers by a 17-12 margin for the match, including a 13-6 edge in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Boston in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State travels to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on UMass Dartmouth in a non-league match that begins at 3:30 p.m.
