BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Ryan Fischer's (Marshfield, Mass.) goal 50 seconds into the second overtime lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 1-0 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over Worcester State Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Fischer converted feeds from junior Andrew Mullen (Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore James Gendrolis (Weymouth, Mass.) for his sixth marker of the season for the host Buccaneers (7-7-1, 1-5 MASCAC), who took advantage of windy conditions in the second extra session that affected both teams throughout the contest.

Both squads had chances to score in the second half of regulation, as senior Mark Johnson (Woburn, Mass.) hit the post for the visiting Lancers (2-13-2, 0-4-2 MASCAC) in the 65th minute and senior Matt McDonnell (Marshfield, Mass.) returned the favor for Massachusetts Maritime in the 82nd minute before Fischer's heroics gave the hosts their second straight triumph and third victory in their last four matches.

Freshman Patrick Slaney (Northbridge, Mass.) picked up his second straight shutout victory with six saves in goal for the Buccaneers, while junior Fred Groos (Floral Park, N.Y.) made four stops in net for Worcester State as the Lancers outshot Massachusetts Maritime by an 11-10 margin.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to Boston on Wednesday afternoon to take on UMass Boston in a non-league outing that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Worcester State closes out its 2009 slate next Saturday afternoon by heading to Salem, Mass. to take on Salem State in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference match that begins at 1:00 p.m.
