SALEM, Mass. -- Senior Andrew Angus (Boston, Mass.) netted the game-winner 4:51 into overtime to lift Salem State to a 1-0 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the league opener for both squads Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Angus' unassisted marker snapped a scoreless regulation tie for the host Vikings (2-2, 1-0 MASCAC), as freshman Scott Hall (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) made that stand up with seven saves to pick up the win in goal for Salem State, as five of those stops came in the first 22:49 of action. Sophomore Mark Mullaney (Bridgewater, Mass.) suffered the setback in net for the visiting Buccaneers (3-2-1, 0-1 MASCAC), as the Vikings outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 13-7 margin in snapping the visitors' three-game unbeaten string.
Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday morning when the Buccaneers head to Framingham, Mass. to take on defending league champion Framingham State in a MASCAC match that begins at 10:00 a.m., while Salem State hosts UMass Boston in a non-league contest on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field beginning at 6:00 p.m.
