BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Luke Brewer (Edgartown, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as Bridgewater State captured the 2009 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference men's soccer regular season championship with a 3-1 league triumph over Massachusetts Maritime Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Bears (9-4-3, 6-0-1 MASCAC) snapped a scoreless tie with three tallies in a 6:19 span early in the second half, as sophomore Chris Swindell's (Milford, Mass.) unassisted marker in the 53rd minute preceded both of Brewer's goals, the first coming in the 56th minute off a Swindell feed and the second coming just 3:31 later off a rebound of a shot by freshman Simao Mendes (Brockton, Mass.).  Senior Matt McDonnell's (Marshfield, Mass.) second goal of the season with 7:12 remaining in the match on an assist from junior Andrew Mullen (Bridgewater, Mass.) accounted for the lone score of the contest for the host Buccaneers (7-8-1, 1-6 MASCAC).

Senior Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, Mass.) picked up his ninth win of the season in goal for Bridgewater State with an eight-save effort, including seven stops in the final 45 minutes of action alone, while freshman Patrick Slaney (Northbridge, Mass.) made a pair of saves in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Bears by a 17-13 margin for the match, including a 13-7 advantage after intermission alone.

Massachusetts Maritime closes out regular season play on Monday afternoon by heading up to Boston to take on UMass Boston in a non-league outing that begins at 2:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State has earned the top seed in next week's Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Championships and will face either Salem State or Fitchburg State in semi-final round action on Wednesday afternoon in Bridgewater, Mass.
