FINAL:                   WHEATON 8, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 7 (DOUBLE OVERTIME)

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Brian Teague’s (Cross River, N.Y.) goal 43 seconds into the second overtime lifted Wheaton to an 8-7 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Teague’s golden goal capped a second half comeback for the visiting Lyons (4-8, 1-3 NEWMAC), who trailed 5-2 at the break but roared back to take a 6-5 lead heading into the final frame with four unanswered third quarter tallies, the last on freshman Will Morrison’s (Osterville, Mass.) marker with six seconds to play in the stanza.  The host Buccaneers (7-6, 1-3 NEWMAC) evened matters with 9:44 remaining in regulation on sophomore Sean Staples’s (Norwell, Mass.) goal and took a 7-6 advantage just 1:27 later on fellow sophomore Anthony Kurylak’s (Exeter, N.H.) man-up marker, but Morrison knotted the score for Wheaton with 5:18 remaining in regulation to force the extra sessions.  After a scoreless first overtime period, freshman Kyle Neale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won his 10th faceoff of the night for the Lyons, setting up Teague’s heroics on the game-winner.

Morrison netted four goals in the triumph for Wheaton, which also received a pair of tallies from freshman Devin Higgins (Nantucket, Mass.) and a single marker from sophomore Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass.).  Freshman Ryan Gjerset (Austin, Tex.) collected a pair of assists for the Lyons, who also received single helpers off the sticks of senior Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine) and junior Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass.).  Freshmen Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.) and Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) each netted two goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which built a 3-1 first quarter lead and extended that margin to 5-1 just 2:50 into the second stanza.  Junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) added a marker and two assists for the Buccaneers, as Jarvis also added a helper to finish with three points for the hosts, who received additional assists off the sticks of sophomores Cody Cafarelli (Burlington, Mass.) and Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) as well as freshman Andrew Lawrence (Reading, Mass.).

Senior Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I.) picked up the win in goal for Wheaton with an eight-save effort, while freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.) suffered the setback with 10 stops over the final 34:43 of action for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received six first half saves from senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.).  The Lyons outshot the Buccaneers by a 40-25 margin and held a 12-8 advantage in the faceoff circle for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Clark in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Wheaton hosts MIT in a NEWMAC outing on Saturday afternoon in Norton, Mass. that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
