FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 15, SUNY-MARITIME 11

CASTINE, Maine --  Junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) netted a career-high five goals and added a pair of assists for seven points as Massachusetts Maritime captured the championship of the inaugural Maritime Cup with a 15-11 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over SUNY-Maritime Saturday afternoon at Maine Maritime’s Ritchie Field.

The Buccaneers, who are off to the first 3-0 start in school history, took control of the contest by scoring the final five goals of the opening half to snap a 5-5 tie and take a 10-5 advantage into the break, as Freudenberg keyed that rally with a pair of markers.  Massachusetts Maritime capped a run of eight unanswered tallies by netting the first three scores after intermission, including a man-up goal off the stick of junior Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.), in taking a 13-5 lead with 6:22 remaining in the third stanza, but the Privateers (1-5) scored the next two goals to close back to within six at 13-7.  Sophomore Anthony Kurylak’s (Exeter, N.H.) man-up marker with 10:32 to play gave the Buccaneers a seven-goal edge, but SUNY-Maritime rallied back with three unanswered goals, including senior James D’Amico’s (Floral Park, N.Y.), to creep back to within four at 14-10 with 3:47 remaining.  Sophomore Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) iced Massachusetts Maritime’s triumph with his second score of the day just 20 seconds later, as the Buccaneers topped the Privateers for the second time in three seasons.

Freudenberg finished with 13 points in the Maritime Cup to pace Massachusetts Maritime, as he collected eight goals and five assists that included a hat trick and three helpers in Friday’s 13-5 opening round win over host Maine Maritime.  Prowse joined Freudenberg with seven points in Saturday’s victory, as he collected his second straight hat trick and chipped in with four assists for the Buccaneers, who also received a marker and three helpers from sophomore Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.).  McLean finished with three points on the day for the winners, who also received a pair of tallies from Kurylak, a marker and helper from freshman Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) as well as a goal from freshman Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.).

Senior Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y.) collected four goals in the setback for SUNY-Maritime, which also received a pair of goals each from D’Amico and freshman Zachary Pace (Monroe Township, N.J.).  Senior Dylan Larmony (Old Berthpage, N.Y.) chipped in with a marker and helper for the Privateers, who also received a tally from senior James Quinn (Deer Park, N.Y.) and single assists off the sticks of senior Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Peter Rooney (Long Beach, N.Y.).

Senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) picked up his third win of the young season in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with a four-save effort in the opening half, while freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.) also made four stops over the final 30 minutes of play for the victors.  Freshman Kieran Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made 10 saves and added an assist on offense over the first 57-plus minutes of play in the setback for SUNY-Maritime, which also received a stop from freshman Alex Heim (Youngstown, N.Y.) over the final 2:18.  The Buccaneers outshot the Privateers by a 48-40 margin for the match in sweeping both Maine Maritime and SUNY-Maritime for the second time in three seasons, as Massachusetts Maritime retained the Admiral’s Cup with last night’s triumph over the Mariners.

Massachusetts Maritime begins a 10-match homestand on Tuesday afternoon by hosting Plymouth State in a non-league match at Clean Harbors Stadium that begins at 4:00 p.m., while SUNY-Maritime takes on host Maine Maritime in its second round Maritime Cup clash on Sunday afternoon at Ritchie Field beginning at Noon.
