FINAL:                   MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 13, MAINE MARITIME 5

CASTINE, Maine --  Junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) netted a hat trick and three assists for six points as Massachusetts Maritime claimed its third straight Admiral’s Cup victory over rival Maine Maritime with a 13-5 non-league college men’s lacrosse triumph in opening round play of the 2014 Maritime Cup Friday evening at Ritchie Field.

The visiting Buccaneers, who are off to their first 2-0 start since the 2006 season, spotted the host Mariners (0-2) the first two goals of the contest before running off six straight scores, including a pair each off the sticks of Freudenberg and sophomore Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.), to take a four-goal advantage at early in the second stanza.  Junior Bronson Guimond (Portland, Maine) ended that skein with a tally that enabled Maine Maritime to close back to within three, but Massachusetts Maritime closed out the half with three straight markers from Freudenberg, junior Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) and sophomore Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) that staked the visitors to a 9-3 edge at the break.  Goals by Prowse and sophomore Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) sandwiched a tally off the stick of Mariner sophomore Justin Lovely (West Gardiner, Maine) that extended Massachusetts Maritime’s lead to 11-4 after three quarters of play, and after Guimond collected his second of the night for the hosts, goals by sophomore Nicholas Foley (Kingston, Mass.) and freshman Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) in the closing minutes iced the Buccaneer triumph.

Prowse joined Freudenberg with a hat trick while adding an assist for four points in the win for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two goals and an assist from McLean as well as two scores off the stick of Staples.  Kurylak finished with a marker and helper for the Buccaneers, who also received an assist from freshman Joe Starkey (Burlington, Mass.).  Lovely finished with a pair of goals and an assist in the setback for Maine Maritime, which also received a tally from senior Nick Snelling (Colchester, Vt.) on the evening.

Senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with four first half saves, as freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.) made a pair of stops over the final 30 minutes of play for the visitors.  Sophomore James Wilgus (Phippsburgh, Maine) made four saves in the setback for the Mariners, who held a 33-29 edge in shots over the Buccaneers for the contest.

Both Massachusetts Maritime and Maine Maritime will square off with SUNY-Maritime in second round play of the 2014 Maritime Cup over the weekend at Ritchie Field, as the Buccaneers and Privateers meet on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. before the Mariners tangle with SUNY-Maritime Sunday at Noon.
