FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 16, ALBERTUS MAGNUS 4

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) and freshman Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.) each netted hat tricks to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 16-4 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Albertus Magnus in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

A pair of Jarvis tallies in the opening 19 minutes of action staked the host Buccaneers (1-0) to an early 3-1 lead, and after freshman Brennan Moore (Meriden, Conn.) pulled the visiting Falcons (0-1) back to within one with 9:13 remaining in the opening half, Jarvis collected a man-down marker that followed a goal by sophomore C.J. Hanson (Melrose, Mass.) in the final 6:43 of play to extend Massachusetts Maritime’s advantage to 5-2 at the break.

McLean gave the hosts a four-goal edge just 51 seconds after intermission, but Albertus Magnus, which was playing its inaugural collegiate varsity contest, crept back to within three just over two minutes later on freshman Justin Bennet’s (Fairfield, Conn.) man-up tally.  The Buccaneers scored two of the next three goals to take an 8-4 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the third stanza, and Massachusetts Maritime would net the final eight goals of the afternoon, as a pair of man-up markers from McLean and junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.), coupled with a man-down tally off the stick of freshman Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.), iced the hosts’ triumph.

McLean added an assist to finish with four points on the day for the Buccaneers, who also received a pair of tallies from freshman Kevin Collins (Hampden, Mass.) as well as a goal and two assists from freshman Patrick Kearney (Scituate, Mass.).  Anderson, along with sophomore Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Hayden Lynch (Dunstable, Mass.), notched a marker and a helper for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received goals off the sticks of sophomore Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) and freshman Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) as well as a helper from junior Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.).

Sophomore Mike Choiniere (Bethany, Conn.) and freshman Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) each netted a goal and an assist in the setback for Albertus Magnus, which also received a helper off the stick of sophomore Adam Earl (Hamden, Conn.).  Senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the win in goal after making one first half save for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received five stops from freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.) in 23-plus second half minutes, while freshman Brandon Scicchitano (Norwalk, Conn.) made 16 saves in 57-plus minutes of play in the setback for the Falcons, which also received a stop from freshman Tucker Johns (Montville, Conn.) in the closing minutes of the match.  The Buccaneers outshot Albertus Magnus by a 49-17 margin for the contest and held a 14-8 face-off advantage while also forcing 31 turnovers.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to Castine, Maine next Friday evening to take on host Maine Maritime in opening round action of the 2014 Maritime Classic beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Albertus Magnus will be idle until Wednesday, March 19th when the Falcons head to Boston to open Great Northeast Athletic Conference play against Emmanuel in a match that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
