Painten, Ferro, Flynn & Freudenberg Named As 2014 Men's Lacrosse Captains

Though Clean Harbors Stadium is covered in snow from the first ‘Noreaster of the New Year, preparations for the 2014 Massachusetts Maritime men’s lacrosse season are well under way, and as those preparations continue, Head Coach Rory Deegan has named his captains for his fourth campaign alongside the Cape Cod Canal.

Deegan, who guided the Buccaneers to five overall triumphs in 2013, has tabbed seniors Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass./Walpole), Stephen Ferro (South Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional) and Thomas Flynn (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich), along with junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony’s), to those leadership roles for the 2014 season, as Painten and Freudenberg are returning captains from last spring.  Deegan, a former standout at Division I Manhattan College, describes this quartet as “completely committed to the overall success, both on and off the field, of our program.  They are proven leaders by example who will set a high standard for their teammates to emulate.”

Painten played in 850 of a possible 903 minutes in net for Massachusetts Maritime last season, as he posted a 10.93 GAA while making 202 saves for a .566 saves percentage, while Freudenberg was the Buccaneers’ second leading scorer with a team-leading 30 goals and 11 assists for 41 points.  Ferro and Flynn combined for 28 match appearances in 2013, with Ferro netting a marker in 13 contests.

Massachusetts Maritime, which has joined the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference as an affiliate member in men’s lacrosse, begins the 2014 campaign on Saturday, March 8th when the Buccaneers entertain Albertus Magnus in a non-league match at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 2:00 p.m. EST.
