NORTON, Mass. --  Senior Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass.) scored seven goals and added an assist for eight points to lead Wheaton to a 16-4 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Pilgrim Lacrosse League opener for both squads Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.

The host Lyons (2-5, 1-0 Pilgrim) scored the first seven goals of the contest and nine of the first 11 markers in the opening 30 minutes of play to take a 9-2 advantage at the break, as Cederberg netted a first half hat trick and added the first four tallies in the first 5:07 after intermission to extend Wheaton’s edge to 13-2 with 9:53 remaining in the third quarter.  The hosts extended that margin to 15-4 heading into the final stanza and netted the lone marker of the final frame to account for the final score.

Senior Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass.) added a hat trick and an assist for four points for the Lyons, who also received a pair of markers from junior Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass.) as well as a goal and four assists from junior Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass.)  Senior Conor Whitney (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) each added a marker and helper on the day for Wheaton, which also received three assists from junior Conor Finn (Kennebunk, Maine).  Sophomore Greg Smith (Centerport, N.Y.) notched a single goal for the hosts, who also received single assists off the sticks of senior Cody Powers (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Cam Hanlon (Hanson, Mass.).

Junior Will Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) netted a hat trick in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (2-7, 0-1 Pilgrim), who also received a marker and helper from senior Chris Davis (Cohasset, Mass.) as well as single assists off the sticks of senior Adam Jaspon (Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomores Alex Katapodis (Wrentham, Mass.) and Austin Waldron (Hanover, Mass.).

Freshman Jesse O’Neil (Charlestown, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with six saves in the first 49 minutes of action, while fellow freshman Matt Guruge (New Ipswich, Mass.) made a pair of stops over the final 11 minutes of play.  Freshman Jack Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 16 saves over the first three quarters of action in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, while fellow freshman Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made one stop in the last 15 minutes of play as the Lyons outshot the Buccaneers by a 44-25 margin for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Boston on Thursday afternoon to take on UMass Boston in a non-league match that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Wheaton hosts Keene State in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m.
