BOSTON, Mass. --  Senior Chris Guilherme (Derry, N.H.) scored five goals and added an assist for six points to lead Wentworth to an 11-5 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the non-league college men’s lacrosse season opener for both squads Tuesday evening at Sweeney Field.

The host Leopards (1-0) scored three times in the first 3:19 of play en route to a 4-1 first quarter advantage, and after the two teams traded markers in the second stanza, Wentworth took control of the contest with four unanswered third quarter tallies, including a pair of the stick of Guilherme, to extend its lead to 8-2 entering the final 15 minutes of play.

Sophomore Patrick Helfrich (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Christopher Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) each added a goal and two assists in the triumph for the hosts, who also received a marker and helper each from sophomore Mark Pappas (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Max Blum (New Fairfield, Conn.).  Senior Lucas Littlefield (Narragansett, R.I.) and freshman Jeff Guilherme (Derry, N.H.) also scored on the evening for the Leopards, who also received an assist from freshman Sam Grande (Bedford, N.H.).

Sophomore James Burns (Duxbury, Mass.) netted a pair of goals in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (0-1), who also received a goal and an assist from senior Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) as well as single tallies off the sticks of senior Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) and junior Will Doucette (Manchester, Mass.).  Senior Chris Davis (Cohasset, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of assists for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a helper from senior Craig Nichols (Marshfield, Mass.).

Sophomore Matt O’Connor (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Wentworth with an 11-save effort, while freshmen Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) and Jack Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) combined for 19 stops in their respective collegiate debuts in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Leopards outshot the Buccaneers by a 41-24 margin for the contest to spoil the debut of Rory Deegan on the Massachusetts Maritime sidelines.

Massachusetts Maritime returns to Boston on Thursday evening to take on Emerson in a non-league outing at Rotch Field that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Wentworth heads to Dudley, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Nichols in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match that begins at 1:30 p.m.
