Cohasset’s Jack Murphy emerged as a solid last line of defense for the Massachusetts Maritime Academy men’s lacrosse team, starting in 15 games his freshman season.

He posted three victories and had an 11.09 goals-against average while making 195 saves for a .575 save percentage. The former Cohasset High standout registered a career-high 20 stops in a 7-5 setback to New York Maritime in the third annual Maritime Cup on March 19.

With the graduation of three-year starter James Hitchings, first-year head coach Rory Deegan turned to Murphy, whose teammates included another Cohasset High graduate, third-leading scorer Chris Davis. The senior had 18 goals and 11 assists, and Walpole’s Paul Painten, a freshman backup goalie, had a 9.60 goals against average.

“Jack showed great poise for a first-year college player, and his leadership will help our program continue to grow,’’ said Deegan.
