BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Kevin Flanigan’s (Sandwich, Mass.) goal with 1:28 remaining snapped a 6-6 tie and lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 7-6 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Becker Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Flanigan converted a feed from senior Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) on the deciding tally for the host Buccaneers (2-5), who trailed 6-5 heading into the final quarter but evened matters with 12:27 to play in the match on senior Jake Bickley’s (Wilbraham, Mass.) second goal of the night.  The visiting Hawks (3-4) had a chance to force overtime in the final 35 seconds of play with a man-up situation following Flanigan’s marker, but junior Matt Adam (Sandwich, Mass.) forced a turnover with 11 seconds to play to set up a clear for Massachusetts Maritime, which ran out the clock to post the triumph.

The Buccaneers grabbed a 2-0 first quarter lead on goals from Linn and fellow senior Chris Davis (Cohasset, Mass.), but Becker stormed back with four unanswered tallies less than three minutes early in the second stanza, including two off the stick of junior Jon Nessen (Levittown, Pa.) and one each from sophomore Jeff Petersen (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman David Deschenes (Gales Ferry, Conn.), to take a 4-2 lead with 9:24 remaining in the half.  Massachusetts Maritime responded with three unanswered goals of its own in a 1:42 span, including one by Bickley and two from junior Will Doucette (Manchester, Mass.), to take a 5-4 lead with 6:30 to play in the frame, but freshman John D’Angelis (Swampscott, Mass.) evened the score for the Hawks with 3:45 remaining to forge a 5-5 draw at the break.  Petersen’s second goal of the evening staked the visitors to a 6-5 edge just 2:55 after intermission, setting up Flanigan’s late heroics for the Buccaneers.

Linn finished with a goal and two assists for three points in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Jack Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 14 saves to record his second victory of the season in goal for the hosts.  Petersen added an assist to his two markers to also finish with three points in the setback for Becker, as freshman Michael Munoz (Avon, Conn.) made 15 stops in net for the visitors.  The Buccaneers outshot the Hawks by a 34-31 margin in a match that saw the two teams combine for 65 turnovers and 23 failed clears.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to Salem, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Salem State in a non-league outing that begins at 8:00 p.m., while Becker heads to Dudley, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to square off with Nichols in a non-league match that begins at 4:00 p.m.
